Maintenance <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/traffic-travel\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">works<\/a> on the major route, which links the M5 and Bristol, were originally meant to finish on August 31.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Now they are not expected to finish until the end of the first week of September, at least a week later than originally forecast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The flyover has been completely closed throughout August for maintenance work, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/south-gloucestershire-council-postpones-roadwork-10428302\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">causing huge delays for motorists<\/a>. The point of doing the work in August, according to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire<\/a> Council, was to minimise disruption during school holidays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">However, the council has now confirmed the road is not expected to reopen until September 8, causing a clash with children going <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/back-to-school-free-uniform-266267\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">back to school<\/a> on September 2. A council spokesperson said the extension to the work was &#8220;due to complications caused by delayed delivery of the replacement expansion joint.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The flyover&#8217;s position near major employers such as Airbus, Rolls Royce and Royal Mail is likely to only add to the September pain as parents return to work after summer holidays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Despite our best efforts, we regret to inform you that the A38 over the Gloucester Road Flyover will not reopen as planned on Sunday 31 August,&#8221; the council wrote on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/facebook\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;The work to replace the expansion joints is now expected to be completed next week with the road due to reopen by Monday 8 September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused by these essential works. This maintenance work is crucial to ensure the long-term safety and usability of the structure for future generations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The flyover closure coincided with several other major works taking place on roads managed by <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire Council<\/a> this summer. Bradley Stoke Way was severely disrupted, and the busy junction between the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/six-weeks-roadworks-junction-close-10353440\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">A4174 Ring Road and Coldharbour Lane<\/a> has also been closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The series of concurrent closures led to chaos on the roads earlier this summer, with some motorists reporting 20-minute journeys were taking up to three hours after contractors mistakenly closed a road in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/filton\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Filton<\/a>, which should have been acting as a diversion route for the flyover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The severity of the issues caused prompted an intervention from Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Claire Hazelgrove, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/south-gloucestershire-council-apologises-mp-10407593\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">and an apology from the council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a subsequent letter in reply to Ms Hazelgrove, the council said: &#8220;The pressures currently facing our local highway network are not isolated &#8211; they are the cumulative result of decades of insufficient government investment in infrastructure maintenance and renewal, often driven by a policy emphasis on keeping taxation low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;In addition, successive Governments have introduced regulatory frameworks for privatised utilities that, to varying degrees, have enabled shareholder dividends to be prioritised over long-term investment in infrastructure.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The council has &#8220;sincerely apologised for the inconvenience&#8221;File image of traffic queuing at the slip road next to&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":381970,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8818],"tags":[2103,15721,381,748,393,600,10300,4884,285,3040,10302,9731,16,15],"class_list":{"0":"post-381969","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-bristol","8":"tag-airbus","9":"tag-bradley-stoke","10":"tag-bristol","11":"tag-britain","12":"tag-england","13":"tag-facebook","14":"tag-filton","15":"tag-great-britain","16":"tag-politics","17":"tag-royal-mail","18":"tag-south-gloucestershire-council","19":"tag-traffic-travel","20":"tag-uk","21":"tag-united-kingdom"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115110909720759371","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/381969","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=381969"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/381969\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/381970"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=381969"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=381969"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=381969"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
