{"id":382222,"date":"2025-08-29T10:42:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T10:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382222\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T10:42:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T10:42:15","slug":"britains-most-hated-boss-to-leave-po-ferries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382222\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Britain\u2019s most hated boss\u2019 to leave P&#038;O Ferries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The controversial chief executive of P&amp;O Ferries, who was widely condemned during the Covid-19 pandemic for sacking 800 mainly British workers, is to leave the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Peter Hebblethwaite, 54, variously dubbed \u201cBritain\u2019s most hated boss\u201d and \u201ca pirate\u201d, is quitting the ferry operator, known for its Dover-Calais short strait crossings, \u201cto dedicate more time to family matters\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Hebblethwaite shot to national fame after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/p-amp-o-says-checks-on-ferries-were-too-rigorous-xmzhct8bc\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mass sacking of workers in 2022<\/a> to lower the ferry operator\u2019s wage bill and put the rest of the workforce on international seafarer agency contracts not covered by UK law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/i-will-not-backtrack-and-i-will-not-resign-says-p-o-ferries-boss-peter-hebblethwaite-tnfkkvvjg\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paying less than half the national minimum wage<\/a>. Some workers were informed of their redundancy by video message.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Hebblethwaite was subsequently eviscerated at a parliamentary inquiry, which prompted changes in the law by the new Labour government to close loopholes and offer workers greater protection.
