{"id":382293,"date":"2025-08-29T11:20:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T11:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382293\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T11:20:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T11:20:13","slug":"stablecoins-hit-record-283bn-as-analysts-eye-path-to-2-trillion-by-2029-dl-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382293\/","title":{"rendered":"Stablecoins hit record $283bn as analysts eye path to $2 trillion by 2029 \u2013 DL News"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"list-outside pl-8\">\n<li>Supply of dollar-pegged tokens smashes record.<\/li>\n<li>Regulatory clarity key catalyst for upside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">There are more stablecoins than ever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">Dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies surged to a fresh record on Friday, further cementing their role at the intersection of crypto and traditional finance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">The total value of stablecoins in circulation hit $282.83 billion, the highest ever, according to DefiLlama <a href=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/?tvl=false&amp;stablecoinsMcap=true\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">That\u2019s a 128% increase since the start of the year, fuelled by swelling demand for dollar-pegged tokens amid regulatory tailwinds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">The only question that remains is how much higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">The industry\u2019s growth is \u201chard to guess but clearly many big, skilled players want to move fast,\u201d Garett Jones, chief economist at ratings agency Bluechip, told DL News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">\u201cA trillion in stables by January 2029 is a plausible guess with a reasonable range from half a trillion to two trillion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Distribution channel\u2019 for dollars<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">The new milestone comes one month after US President Donald Trump signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/07\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-signs-genius-act-into-law\/\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Genius Act<\/a> into law, which aims to regulate the stablecoin industry at the federal level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">Stablecoins are a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value via a 1:1 peg with the U.S. dollar. They are commonly used by crypto traders to move funds between tokens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">They also serve as \u201cglobal distribution channels for US dollars,\u201d Kevin Lehtiniitty, CEO of stablecoin issuer Borderless.xyz, told DL News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">Lehtiniitty argues that government policy, not demand, will determine the pace of growth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">\u201cStablecoin market caps can easily 5-10x in the near term on the back of cross-border payments, on-chain capital markets, and tokenised cash-equivalents. The gating factor isn\u2019t user demand but rather the regulatory posture across Treasury, the Fed, and Congress,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">With the Genius Act providing clarity, stablecoin adoption is expected to accelerate further. <\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">\u201cThe GENIUS Act provides the fast-growing stablecoin market with the regulatory clarity it needs to grow into a multitrillion-dollar industry,\u201d US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/sb0197\" rel=\" nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p><b>Crypto market movers<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li>Bitcoin is down 2.9% over the past 24 hours to trade at $109,695.<\/li>\n<li>Ethereum is down 5.7% to trade at $4,331.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What we\u2019re reading<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"puppeteer-article-text-type-element\">Lance Datskoluo is DL News\u2019 Europe-based markets correspondent.
