{"id":382555,"date":"2025-08-29T13:38:14","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T13:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382555\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T13:38:14","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T13:38:14","slug":"paris-urges-eu-action-over-banned-antibiotics-in-ukrainian-eggs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382555\/","title":{"rendered":"Paris urges EU action over banned antibiotics in Ukrainian eggs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong>The French government has confirmed industry warnings that supermarkets in France sold Ukrainian eggs containing antibiotic residues that are prohibited in the EU, and is pressing Brussels to tighten border controls.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFrench retail giants Carrefour and Leclerc sold hundreds of thousands of such eggs, the National Committee for the Promotion of Eggs (CNPO), which represents farmers, processors and retailers, <a href=\"https:\/\/oeuf-info.fr\/importations-doeufs-ukrainiens-les-professionnels-francais-alertent-les-consommateurs-et-interpellent-la-grande-distribution-et-le-ministere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement on Thursday<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe group warned of \u201ca significant health risk to consumers\u201d, stating that the eggs \u201cmay contain substances that are banned in Europe,\u201d such as antibiotic residues, and urging public authorities to \u201cimmediately step up health compliance checks\u201d on these products.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe CNPO also raised concerns about unfair competition, arguing that the Ukrainian eggs \u201cdo not comply with the same health standards\u201d or \u201canimal welfare practices\u201d applied in France.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>France turns to Brussels<\/strong><br \/>\nAgriculture Minister Annie Genevard confirmed the reports, telling journalists on Friday that &#8220;European checks this summer revealed the presence of antibiotics banned in Europe in eggs from Ukraine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\nShe also criticised supermarkets for failing to prioritise &#8220;French production over imports of foodstuffs that do not meet our standards,&#8221; saying it &#8220;poses an ethical problem for me&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nGenevard called for the creation of a &#8220;European control agency&#8221; to strengthen controls and reinforce compliance checks, and demanded that &#8220;for any practice banned in Europe, a maximum residue limit for these practices [be] set at zero on all imported products&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>An &#8216;isolated case&#8217;<\/strong><br \/>\nLeclerc acknowledged the breach, but insisted it was an isolated incident.<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;One store took an unfortunate initiative.
