{"id":382569,"date":"2025-08-29T13:45:20","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T13:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382569\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T13:45:20","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T13:45:20","slug":"study-tracks-uks-journey-from-seafood-self-sufficiency-to-dependence-on-imports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/382569\/","title":{"rendered":"Study tracks UK\u2019s journey from seafood self-sufficiency to dependence on imports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than a century of data <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11160-025-09942-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reveals<\/a> how the UK has gone from supplying domestic seafood needs from productive home waters to importing seafood from almost 90 countries.<\/p>\n<p>University of Exeter researchers compiled data on UK fishing and seafood imports from 1900 to 2020.<\/p>\n<p>They found that catch in UK waters declined in the 1970s due to overfishing, and subsequently due to regulations brought in to rebuild fish stocks. Imports grew to meet the growing supply gap \u2013 and by 1985 imports overtook domestic landings.<\/p>\n<p>Seafood eaten in the UK is mostly the \u201cbig five\u201d \u2013 cod, haddock, salmon, tuna and prawns \u2013 which are either depleted or non-existent in our waters.<\/p>\n<p>The UK now imports more than six times as much seafood as in 1900, and it comes from over 2,000 miles away on average \u2013 with China the largest source. Today, an estimated 80% of UK seafood demand is met by imports from overseas fisheries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe historical records show that the UK imported from five countries in 1900 and 89 by 2020,\u201d said first author Zoe Heard, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/ecologyconservation.exeter.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Ecology and Conservation<\/a> on Exeter\u2019s Penryn Campus in Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now import seafood from all continents \u2013 showing how our demand for seafood has an increasingly global reach.
