Lord Woodbine, born Harold Adolphus Phillips, came to Britain from Trinidad in 1943 and served as a Royal Air Force flight engineer during the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/world-war-2\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Second World War.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He later returned to the UK in 1948 aboard the HMT Empire Windrush and settled in Liverpool where he performed as a musician, calypsonian, composer, band leader, and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/music-nightlife-news\/legendary-venue-took-gamble-celebrating-30874175\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">manager of The Jacaranda Club.<\/a> Harold was said to be the first singer-songwriter <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/the-beatles\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">John Lennon and Paul McCartney<\/a> \u201cever encountered\u201d. In a music scene dominated by cover acts, he did not tell the pair to write songs, he showed them that it was possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a 1970 interview, Lennon recalled the first song he ever wrote was Calypso Rock, written in 1957, a reflection of the musical environment Lord Woodbine helped create.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_The-Windrush-war-hero.jpg\" alt=\"Harold Phillips, otherwise known as Lord Woodbine, who arrived in Britain on HMT Windrush\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Harold Phillips, otherwise known as Lord Woodbine, who arrived in Britain on HMT Windrush(Image: Carol Phillips)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Variously described as the &#8216;Sixth Beatle&#8217; and &#8216;the man who put the beat in Merseybeat&#8217;, Lord Woodbine went on to create a lasting legacy that shaped the music and culture of, not just Liverpool, but also the rest of the world &#8211; helping to take The Beatles to Hamburg and even smuggling an <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/windrush-war-hero-who-smuggled-17399489\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">underage George Harrison into the German city.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Although never formally written out of history, Harold often felt excluded from The Beatles\u2019 story. Maybe the great Beatle publicity machine did not want a Black man associated with their boys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Still, he held no bitterness, believing simply that there was a time when The Beatles needed him, and that time had passed. The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">ECHO spoke <\/a>with Lord Woodbine&#8217;s children, Hudson and Carol Phillips at the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Carol said: &#8220;We&#8217;re all so proud, my family. He didn&#8217;t really talk about The Beatles but he had a lot to say.
