{"id":384657,"date":"2025-08-30T08:21:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T08:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/384657\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T08:21:25","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T08:21:25","slug":"older-people-on-weekly-state-pension-less-than-346-could-be-due-4300-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/384657\/","title":{"rendered":"Older people on weekly State Pension less than \u00a3346 could be due \u00a34,300 boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of Pension Credit claimants has soared since last summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">New data released by the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/pension-credit-applications-and-awards?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=govuk-notifications-topic&amp;utm_source=0372e9f8-a80e-41df-9bd0-7fd536d4bc5a&amp;utm_content=immediately\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Department for Work and PensionsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Department for Work and Pensions<\/a> (DWP) shows that in the year since the announcement that the Winter Fuel Payment would be restricted to those receiving Pension Credit and other certain income-related benefits on July 29, 2024, claims have jumped 44 per cent and risen by 98,200 extra applications to 320,300.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">By the end of July this year, some 181,100 <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pension-credit\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Pension Credit claimsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Pension Credit claims<\/a> for the means-tested benefit &#8211; worth over \u00a34,300 this year &#8211; were cleared and awarded. While the UK Government\u2019s policy on Winter Fuel Payments has grown awareness of this issue and increased take up of Pension Credit significantly, the rise of claimants in the past year still does not get near to closing the gap sufficiently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe would urge all pensioners to check whether they are eligible for Pension Credit as we head towards another winter that appears likely to be dominated by the cost of living, the adequacy of the State Pension and further tax rises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Pension Credit is the most under-claimed benefit and is specifically aimed at providing additional financial support for older people on a low income &#8211; singles and couples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Some older people think because they have savings or own their home they would not be eligible for the means-tested benefit, which can also provide access to help with housing costs, heating bills and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/council-tax\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Council TaxLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Council Tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">An award of just \u00a31 per week is enough to unlock other support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Below is an overview of the benefit including who should check eligibility, how to go about it, how much you could get and where to get help filling in the form.<\/p>\n<p>Who can claim Pension Credit?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">There are two types of Pension Credit &#8211; Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">To qualify for <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Guarantee Pension Credit<\/strong> , you must be State Pension age (66). Your weekly income will need to be less than the minimum amount the UK Government says you need to live on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This is \u00a3227.10 for a single person and \u00a3346.60 for a couple &#8211; this amount could be higher if you&#8217;re disabled, a carer or have certain housing costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">You can only get Savings Credit if:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">you reached State Pension age before April 6, 2016, or you have a partner who reached State Pension age before this date and was already receiving it<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">you have qualifying income of at least \u00a3198.27 a week for a single person and \u00a3314.34 a week for a couple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How much could you receive from DWP?<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">\u00a3227.10 for a single person<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">\u00a3346.60 for a couple (married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">You might be able to get more than this if you&#8217;re disabled or a carer, or you have certain housing costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">Savings Credit can give you up to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">\u00a317.30 a week for a single person<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">\u00a319.36 a week for a couple (married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The exact amount you\u2019ll get depends on your income and savings.
