Last week we revealed that\u00a0Woking had just been named London\u2019s best commuter town<\/a>. But what about the worst\u00a0location for the capital\u2019s commuters?<\/p>\n

A new study by\u00a0mortgage lenders Pepper Money has ranked the\u00a0best and worst commuter towns in Britain. The analysts took into account\u00a0average house prices (to buy and to rent), travel time, public transport cost and quality of life to come up with a total score.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Woking in Surrey came out on top for London, thanks to its low crime rates, short\u00a0commute time and relatively\u00a0modest\u00a0house prices, other locations didn\u2019t perform so well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Luton<\/strong> was named as not only the\u00a0most rubbish commuter town for London, but the worst in all of Britain. Oh dear. Luton scored a\u00a0meagre\u00a0114 points out of\u00a0469 in the report. While rents and house prices in the town northwest of London were low compared to the capital\u2019s other commuter towns (they averaged at\u00a0\u00a31,190 per month and\u00a0\u00a3285,000, respectively),\u00a0the median\u00a0salary\u00a0in Luton\u00a0was only \u00a333,202,\u00a0compared to Woking\u2019s\u00a0\u00a342,624.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u2018While Luton appears more affordable on paper, with lower house prices and rents, its longer commute (36 minutes) and lower average salary make it less attractive overall,\u2019 the report wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, things could be looking up for Luton. The town\u2019s ever-growing airport is to undergo a huge expansion over the next several years<\/a>, which is predicted to create 11,000 jobs in the area. The Luton Airport expansion could also pave the way for the highly anticipated new Universal Studios UK,\u00a0which is\u00a0tipped to open nearby in Bedford<\/a>\u00a0within the next decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n
