UK homes that reimagine traditional bay windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In our latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/roundups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roundup<\/a>, we look at recently completed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/extensions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extensions<\/a> that offer a contemporary twist on traditional bay windows.<\/p>\n<p>Bay windows, which are commonly found across Victorian and Edwardian homes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK<\/a>, typically comprise a series of angled windows that protrude from a building&#8217;s facade.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we have collected seven modern interpretations, including an angular, terracotta-clad extension and a double-height bay window finished in stone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/27\/material-works-hackney-home-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240304 rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hackney Bay House, UK, by Material Works\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>London-based studio Material Works extended this Victorian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/hackney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hackney<\/a> with a large double-height bay window that takes visual cues from the home&#8217;s terraced street.<\/p>\n<p>Finished in natural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/stone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stone<\/a>, the rear extension creates a series of open, light-filled living spaces on the home&#8217;s ground floor and mezzanine level.<\/p>\n<p><a Architects<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/terrazzo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terrazzo<\/a>, concrete and clay-toned plaster were used by architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/con-form-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ConForm Architects<\/a> to create the Terzetto extension at this flat in Hampstead, London.<\/p>\n<p>Defined by a geometric form, the extension was modelled on the components of a bay window \u2013 including a plinth, column and pediment \u2013 and contains an open-plan Ducker<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/gundry-ducker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gundry &amp; Ducker<\/a> designed a white-painted bay window to unite the existing exterior of this Victorian home in Hackney with its new rear extension.<\/p>\n<p>The studio was tasked by the clients to preserve the home&#8217;s Victorian features, which were renewed with a fresh palette of colours chosen to &#8220;inject some character and drama&#8221; into the home.<\/p>\n<p><a Architecture\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bricks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brick<\/a> facade of Woodbury Residence in north London was designed by local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/of-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Of Architecture<\/a> with a bay window that subtly mimics the appearance of its Edwardian neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>Designed for an elderly resident, the home contains fully-accessible ground floor living spaces, off which a seating space is framed by the home&#8217;s bay rel=\"noopener\">Mole Architects<\/a> designed this seaside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/houses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home<\/a> in Wells-next-the-Sea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/norfolk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norfolk<\/a>, to look like an ad hoc cluster of cottages and terraces found in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Comprised of three connected blocks, the home&#8217;s first floor living spaces are complemented by a projecting bay window clad in corten steel that connects two of the home&#8217;s volumes.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\">loft<\/a> extension in Lewisham completed by London-based OEB Architects takes cues from Italian palazzos and paintings for its addition of colonnaded bay windows.<\/p>\n<p>Red and yellow architraves defined the extension&#8217;s exterior.
