{"id":385382,"date":"2025-08-30T16:18:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-30T16:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/385382\/"},"modified":"2025-08-30T16:18:27","modified_gmt":"2025-08-30T16:18:27","slug":"watch-gorillaz-play-debut-album-in-full-as-they-kick-off-london-residency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/385382\/","title":{"rendered":"Watch Gorillaz play debut album in full as they kick off London residency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/gorillaz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gorillaz<\/a> played their debut album in full for the first show of their London residency \u2013 check out the full setlist and fan-shot footage below.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"post-content-read-more\">\n<li><strong>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/gorillaz-cracker-island-review-lyrics-tracklist-3402624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gorillaz \u2013 \u2018Cracker Island\u2019 review: conventional, but richly satisfying<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/damon-albarn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Damon Albarn<\/a>-led band kicked off the first of four limited-capacity live shows at the Copper Box Arena in London last night (August 29).\u00a0Marking the closing week of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/gorillaz-to-celebrate-25-years-with-new-london-exhibition-house-of-kong-3863945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their House of Kong exhibition<\/a> at the venue, the gigs will run until September 3, and will see Albarn joined on stage by the full Gorillaz live band and backed by visuals by Jamie Hewlett.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll also see the band revisit iconic live shows from their early days, performing each record in full, from beginning to end, in a limited-capacity setting.<\/p>\n<p>Last night, the band performed their self-titled 2001 debut album in full while recreating their iconic first live shows at London\u2019s Scala and La Cigale Paris. These early shows first saw members Murdoc, Noodle, Russel and 2D front and centre via Hewlett\u2019s visuals, while Albarn and the full live band appeared in silhouette behind a screen.<\/p>\n<p>The show saw them play \u2018Double Bass\u2019 and \u2018Ghost Train\u2019 live for the first time ever, while \u2018Starshine\u2019, \u2018Slow Country\u2019, \u2018Sound Check (Gravity)\u2019, and \u2018Man Research (Clapper)\u2019 were performed for the first time since 2002.<\/p>\n<p>They also played \u2018Clint Eastwood\u2019 twice, and were joined on stage by Miho Hatori, who was the first person to provide the voice of Noodle in the virtual band.<\/p>\n<p>Check out footage, and the entire setlist, below.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">DAY 1 OF GORILLAZ SHOWS DONE<\/p>\n<p>GORILLAZ DEBUT WAS AMAZING TO WITNESS LIVE. Like the night prior, this gig will also see the band recreate the visuals and structure of the original shows as a one-off.<\/p>\n<p>This Tuesday (September 2) will then see the band play their 2010 third album \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/blogs\/nme-blogs\/gorillaz-plastic-beach-murdocs-track-by-track-guide-781091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plastic Beach<\/a>\u2019 in full. This will mark the first full live performance of the album since two shows at London\u2019s Roundhouse 15 years ago, and will again recreate the visuals seen from the original gigs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the fourth show will be held on September 3 and is described by the band as a \u2018Mystery Show\u2019. It isn\u2019t yet clear if there will be any special guests joining Albarn, nor has it been shared which songs fans can expect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gorillaz\u2019s live shows at Copper Box are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AUGUST<\/strong><br \/><strong>29 \u2013 \u2018Gorillaz\u2019 (self-titled debut)<\/strong><br \/><strong>30 \u2013 \u2018Demon Days\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEPTEMBER<\/strong><br \/><strong>02 \u2013 \u2018Plastic Beach\u2019<\/strong><br \/><strong>03 \u2013 Mystery Show<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>This year has also seen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/damon-albarn-teases-new-gorillaz-album-for-2025-3849887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Albarn tease a new Gorillaz album, and suggest it will be arriving later in 2025<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m finishing a new Gorillaz album. One opera and one new Gorillaz album seems like enough for 2025,\u201d he told French magazine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesinrocks.com\/musique\/damon-albarn-un-opera-et-un-nouvel-album-de-gorillaz-ca-me-semble-suffisant-pour-2025-653127-25-03-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Les Inrockuptibles<\/a>. \u201cUnless someone accuses me of taking my foot off the gas!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hewlett then added fuel to the fire, writing in an Instagram comment: \u201cYes, the new album is coming out this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/gorillaz-tease-new-music-ahead-of-25th-anniversary-shows-3883764\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in an interview with Channel 4 earlier this month, Albarn seemed to further tease new music<\/a>. When asked, \u201cSo might there be something new there?\u201d, the musician responded, \u201cThere might. I mean, yes. In that sense, yeah,\u201d while Hewlett mimed his throat being cut.<\/p>\n<p>Gorillaz\u2019s last album, 2023\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/gorillaz-cracker-island-review-lyrics-tracklist-3402624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cracker Island<\/a>\u2019, was given\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/gorillaz-cracker-island-review-lyrics-tracklist-3402624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a four-star review<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0NME\u00a0and described as \u201ca consistently enjoyable record that shows why they remain relevant so far into their career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA band that was once considered mucking about on the periphery of pop are now very much defining the present and inspiring the future.
