Two local businesses have won the naming rights to races at the annual Millicent Cup Day race meet at the Allan Scott Racecourse at Glenburnie on May 25.\u2029<\/p>\n
The Grand Hotel and G Square had their names chosen by chance when the Millicent Racing Club recently held its annual 600 Club function at its racecourse.\u2029<\/p>\n
Club president John Payne thanked the 600 Club members from the Millicent business sector for their support of his 151-year-old club.\u2029<\/p>\n
With the assistance of Racing SA, club funds and naming rights sponsor John Chay & Co, the total stake money of $31,800 on offer for the Millicent Cup is sure to be a drawcard.\u2029<\/p>\n
The Millicent Racing Club conducts one meeting per annum and this will be the fourth consecutive year it will make use of the Mount Gambier facilities.\u2029<\/p>\n
Backing from Millicent businesses has enabled the club to run seven races in 2025.\u2029<\/p>\n
Run over 2050m, there were no Millicent horses entered in the Millicent Cup field a year ago.\u2029<\/p>\n
The last Millicent Cup hometown runner to salute the judge was General Magic in 2002 and the trainer was \u201cNed\u201d Walker (now deceased).\u2029<\/p>\n
As part of the Millicent Cup program, a Calcutta will be staged at the Millicent Football Netball Club at McLaughlin Park on May 23.\u2029<\/p>\n
There is expected to be strong support for the sit-down luncheon in the members\u2019 dining room on Cup Day.\u2029<\/p>\n
In recent years it has been renamed the Redelva Luncheon in honour of Millicent\u2019s greatest horse and a SA Racing Hall of Famer.\u2029<\/p>\n
