Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester United<\/a> defender Gary Neville has addressed his shocking early-season prediction that Liverpool<\/a> would finish outside the top-four spots. Neville’s return to that point comes as the Reds edge closer to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.<\/p>\n

Arne Slot<\/a>‘s team took another huge step towards footballing immortality on Sunday afternoon, securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. Returning from injury, substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold<\/a> struck late to score the game’s only goal, sealing three vital points.<\/p>\n

Provided Arsenal beat Crystal Palace midweek, Liverpool will be crowned champions next Sunday if they beat Tottenham at Anfield<\/a>. A feat that few, including Neville, ever anticipated when the first ball of the Slot era was kicked back in August last year.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, Neville clarified his earlier prediction, explaining it was based on the decline other clubs have suffered following the departure of high-profile managers. Given Jurgen Klopp<\/a>‘s immense influence at Anfield, he hadn’t expected a new head coach to step in and take the reins so seamlessly.<\/p>\n

“None of us can rewrite history,” he said on The Gary Neville Podcast<\/a> after Liverpool’s win over Leicester. “I don’t think there were many Liverpool fans who thought they could win the league, let alone anybody else.<\/p>\n

“I don’t remember any pundit, analyst, journalist or fan saying that Liverpool will win the league. It was Man City or Arsenal – to do what they have done is very special and there’s nothing like being at Anfield, next Sunday, knowing you’ve got a game for the title with ones to spare.<\/p>\n

“They’re not going to be pushed at the end, but that’s not their problem. That’s the problem of the others, the problem of City, the problem of Arsenal.<\/p>\n

“I think, at the start of the season, I had them [Liverpool] in fifth. I thought they would be… just a natural fall off as there sometimes is when a [Arsene] Wenger leaves, or a Sir Alex Ferguson leaves, there is just a natural drop.<\/p>\n

“That’s why I think the manager and coaches deserve enormous credit.
