{"id":386415,"date":"2025-08-31T03:52:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T03:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/386415\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T03:52:12","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T03:52:12","slug":"fiba-bans-fan-for-racist-abuse-toward-germanys-dennis-schroder-during-eurobasket-win-over-lithuania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/386415\/","title":{"rendered":"FIBA bans fan for racist abuse toward Germany\u2019s Dennis Schr\u00f6der during EuroBasket win over Lithuania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIBA has banned a spectator from EuroBasket for engaging in racist verbal abuse directed at German captain and Sacramento Kings guard Dennis Schr\u00f6der during Germany\u2019s win over Lithuania in Tampere, Finland, on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>FIBA, the international governing body for basketball, said that on-site security, using CCTV footage, identified and banned the person and has given the footage to local law enforcement, who are continuing to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>While walking to the locker room at halftime, Schr\u00f6der was subjected to \u201cmonkey noises from some Lithuanian fans,\u201d German Basketball Federation President Ingo Weiss said in a statement in German on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is completely unacceptable to us,\u201d Weiss said. \u201cThere is no place for such behaviour anywhere, and certainly not in the colorful, diverse and open world of basketball. We stand fully behind Dennis, understand his distress and will intervene with the organizers to ensure that such incidents don\u2019t take place here again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the 107-88 win, Germany secured its spot in the Round of 16. Schr\u00f6der scored 26 of those points, a game-high.<\/p>\n<p>FIBA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiba.basketball\/en\/news\/fiba-statement-on-incident-during-fiba-eurobasket-2025-game-between-germany-lithuania\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement Saturday<\/a> that it will \u201cengage with the Lithuanian team delegation to inform them of the situation and to support efforts aimed at preventing similar incidents in future games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFIBA unequivocally condemns hate speech, discriminatory conduct, and racist language in any form,\u201d its statement said. \u201cCreating an inclusive, respectful, and safe environment for players, teams, and fans remains a fundamental priority of our sport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Athletic has reached out to the Lithuanian Basketball Federation for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Schr\u00f6der grew up in Braunschweig, Germany, the son of a German father and a Gambian mother.
