{"id":386867,"date":"2025-08-31T09:01:13","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T09:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/386867\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T09:01:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T09:01:13","slug":"aid-flotilla-with-greta-thunberg-set-to-sail-for-gaza-to-break-illegal-siege-greta-thunberg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/386867\/","title":{"rendered":"Aid flotilla with Greta Thunberg set to sail for Gaza to \u2018break illegal siege\u2019 | Greta Thunberg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A flotilla carrying humanitarian aid and activists, including Swedish climate campaigner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/greta-thunberg\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greta Thunberg<\/a>, is due to leave from Barcelona on Sunday to try to \u201cbreak the illegal siege of Gaza\u201d, organisers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The vessels will set off from the Spanish port city to \u201copen a humanitarian corridor and end the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people\u201d, said the Global Sumud Flotilla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They did not say how many ships would set sail or the exact time of departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The flotilla is expected to arrive at the war-ravaged coastal enclave in mid-September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis will be the largest solidarity mission in history, with more people and more boats than all previous attempts combined,\u201d Brazilian activist Thiago \u00c1vila told journalists in Barcelona last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Organisers say that dozens of other vessels are expected to leave Tunisian and other Mediterranean ports on 4 September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Activists will also stage simultaneous demonstrations and other protests in 44 countries \u201cin solidarity with the Palestinian people\u201d, Thunberg, who is part of the flotilla\u2019s steering committee, wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As well as Thunberg, the flotilla will include activists from several countries, European lawmakers and public figures such as former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe understand that this is a legal mission under international law,\u201d leftwing Portuguese lawmaker Mariana Mort\u00e1gua, who will join the mission, told journalists in Lisbon last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Israel has already blocked two attempts by activists to deliver aid by ship to Gaza, in June and July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In June, 12 activists on board the sailboat Madleen were intercepted by Israeli forces 185km west of Gaza.
