{"id":386911,"date":"2025-08-31T09:35:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T09:35:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/386911\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T09:35:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T09:35:24","slug":"five-msps-filmed-by-spy-cam-hidden-in-parliament-toilet-contacted-by-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/386911\/","title":{"rendered":"Five MSPs &#8216;filmed by spy cam hidden in parliament toilet&#8217; contacted by police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police are trying to identify those caught by a hidden camera in the wake of Colin Smyth MSP being arrested and charged with possession of indecent images.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1_Colin-Smyth-DGRI.jpg\" alt=\"South of Scotland MSP Colin Smyth\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>South of Scotland MSP Colin Smyth(Image: Jim McEwan)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">At least five MSPs along with several journalists and staff have been contacted by police over alleged secret toilet recordings in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/scottish-parliament\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Parliament.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Parliament.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Detectives have begun interviewing people already identified in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/cctv-footage\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"footageLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">footage<\/a> understood to be from a covert camera hidden in a cubicle in the Holyrood building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">So far officers have identified at least five parliamentarians, as well as one journalist and several other staff members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/sunday-mail\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Sunday MailLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sunday Mail<\/a> can reveal all those identified are male and were captured by the device allegedly concealed in a small men\u2019s loo opposite the main Holyrood chamber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The facilities have just two cubicles and are only for parliamentary pass holders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The revelation comes after <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/politics\/msp-colin-smyth-denies-hiding-35815382?int_source=mantis_rec&amp;int_medium=web&amp;int_campaign=more_like_this\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"MSP Colin SmythLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">MSP Colin Smyth<\/a> was arrested and charged with possession of indecent images. He is due at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/courts\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Dumfries Sheriff CourtLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Dumfries Sheriff Court<\/a> at a later date.The married dad \u2013 who has been suspended by Labour \u2013 denies the allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A source told the Sunday Mail officers were working to identify those caught on camera while using the toilet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">They said: \u201cSome MSPs have already been interviewed about it. Meanwhile Parliament chiefs are under fire after taking weeks to revoke Smyth\u2019s access to Holyrood, despite the charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A Parliament spokesman said it wasn\u2019t until three days after his arrest that police made them aware of images potentially taken at Holyrood. They said the identity of the person being investigated was not disclosed to them and to date they have no confirmation these lines of inquiry relate to Smyth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It was on August 20, that the Parliamentary authorities say they became aware of the charges in relation to the possession of indecent images against Smyth when the story appeared in the media.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/0_proxy-37.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The camera was hidden in the Scottish Parliament.(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Smyth\u2019s access was revoked after our sister paper the Record approached them to ask about the allegations of a spy camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In the 23 days between Smyth being charged and having his pass revoked, he did visit Parliament with constituents at least once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">MSPs and staff have asked why Holyrood chiefs didn\u2019t take action earlier to block Smyth from Parliament if they knew from August 8 about the potential for a hidden camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">One MSP said: \u201cIf I was told someone had been alleged to have planted a camera in a toilet and it had recorded countless people, the first thing I\u2019d do is ask who is thought to have done this and at least temporarily suspend their access. If necessary the whole building should have been locked down while searches were done and we should have been notified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cObviously we do not know at this stage what has gone on, it\u2019s all allegations. But to protect the users of the building they should have taken action straight away. Now it looks as if they\u2019ve been forced into doing something because the media has got hold of the story. It\u2019s appalling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cMy staff are extremely concerned about this as well. They\u2019ve lost confidence in the ability of the chief executive to keep them safe and frankly, to tell the truth without it being forced out of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/3_JS295401429.jpg\" alt=\"Alison Johnstone, Holyrood presiding officer\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Alison Johnstone, Holyrood presiding officer(Image: Andrew Milligan\/PA Wire)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Sunday Mail asked the Parliament exactly when officials were told about a spy camera, and how many times Smyth had visited Parliament since August 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spokesman said: \u201cOn August 8, Police Scotland made the parliamentary authorities aware of images potentially taken at Holyrood. The identity of the person being investigated was not disclosed to us and to date we have no confirmation that these lines of inquiry relate to Mr Smyth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cAny action the Scottish Parliament Corporate Body takes regarding Mr Smyth must be based on verified information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cOn August 20, the parliamentary authorities became aware of the charges in relation to the possession of indecent images against Mr Smyth when the story appeared in the media.
