Eight French departments are on (high) alert and 50 on (yellow) alert as violent storms are forecast to sweep the country during the night of August 31 – September 1, with south and central areas expected to be most affected.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The departments on high alert for August 31 are all in south and central France, namely: Allier, Ard\u00e8che, C\u00f4te-d\u2019Or, Gard, Loz\u00e8re, Ni\u00e8vre, Puy-de-D\u00f4me and Sa\u00f4ne-et-Loire.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ard\u00e8che and Gard are also on alert due to the possibility of local flooding, as the storm may bring intense rain.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn active disturbance is moving into south-eastern regions on Sunday afternoon. In the evening, an \u2018\u00e9pisode M\u00e9diterran\u00e9en\u2019 will set in with very heavy storm precipitation,\u201d said state forecaster M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France in its daily bulletin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese may exceed 80mm in less than three hours, with totals of over 100mm expected over the course of the episode, and up to 150mm locally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThunderstorms will also bring strong electrical activity, hail and locally strong wind gusts.\u201d<\/p>\n

An \u00e9pisode M\u00e9diterran\u00e9en (sometimes called an \u00e9pisode c\u00e9venol when it is predominantly the C\u00e9vennes of Gard, Ard\u00e8che and H\u00e9rault)<\/a> is caused by a clash of warm from the Mediterranean sea clashing with cold air in the mountain ranges of the Massif Central or Alps.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This sudden interaction leads to intense downpours where weeks worth of rain can fall in a few hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For the Auvergne region, forecasters expect a short albeit violent episode on Sunday evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rainfall could reach 15 to 30mm in under an hour, with six-hour totals of up to 40mm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Winds could peak at 80 to 100km\/h, locally higher, and hailstones could reach medium to large size.<\/p>\n

Residents in areas on high alert <\/a>are advised to limit travel where possible, avoid walking or driving on flooded roads, and secure outdoor objects that could be blown away.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Authorities also recommend checking local updates regularly<\/a> as the situation can change quickly.<\/p>\n

Bad weather to continue on Monday<\/p>\n

Six departments are expected to remain on high alert on Monday, September 1: Ard\u00e8che, Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne, Dr\u00f4me, Gard, Loz\u00e8re and Vaucluse.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rain and flooding risks will also apply to five of them: the Ard\u00e8che, Bouches-du-Rh\u00f4ne, Dr\u00f4me, Gard and Vaucluse.<\/p>\n

M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France says more areas may be added on Monday, particularly for neighbouring departments further east.<\/p>\n
