Meghan Markle has been married to Prince Harry for seven years, and royal fans are still confused about her last name.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Duchess of Sussex tried to clear up the confusion in an Aug. 26 interview with Bloomberg<\/a>, but it\u2019s definitely \u201ccomplicated\u201d for those of us who aren\u2019t in the royal family.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got married, I changed my name<\/a>,\u201d she told reporter Emily Chang. \u201cBut it\u2019s a complicated one for people to understand because a last name is not typical in that construct.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her husband\u2019s name is Henry Charles Albert David, but their title is a \u201cdukedom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the truth of it. My legal name is Meghan Duchess of Sussex,\u201d Meghan continued. \u201cSussex for us works as our family name, and it\u2019s the name that we share with our children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Viewers of the first season of With Love, Meghan on Netflix were stunned to learn that her official name was \u201cMeghan Sussex.\u201d On the Mindy Kaling episode, the actress called her \u201cMeghan Markle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so funny, too, that you keep saying, \u2018Meghan Markle,’\u201d the Duchess of Sussex said with a smile to Kaling. \u201cYou know, I\u2019m Sussex now.<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n

The moment was a little awkward, but it brought up a conversation about royal last names. Kaling talked about that Netflix moment during a visit on The View<\/a> on March 6 \u2014 and she wasn\u2019t even fazed by it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were making sandwiches, and then they\u2019ll push in on my face on TikTok and they\u2019ll be like, \u2018Look at this emotion you felt,\u2019 and I honestly didn\u2019t even remember it,\u201d she said honestly.<\/p>\n

The official royal website has an explanation<\/a> for us non-royals, too: \u201cMembers of the Royal Family can be known both by the name of the Royal house, and by a surname, which are not always the same, and often they do not use a surname at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Prince Harry and Prince William were kids, they were referred to as Harry Wales and William Wales because that was their parents\u2019 title: Prince and Princess of Wales. It\u2019s hard to comprehend for Americans because their last names change frequently as they ascend higher toward the throne. And that\u2019s something Meghan empathizes with as an American.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get it because I\u2019m American,\u201d Meghan summed up to Bloomberg. \u201cI went there and I started to understand, then you come back and as an American, you go, \u2018I\u2019m so confused.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
