{"id":387798,"date":"2025-08-31T20:42:15","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T20:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/387798\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T20:42:15","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T20:42:15","slug":"norway-signs-10bn-deal-for-anti-submarine-warships-built-in-uk-bae-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/387798\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway signs \u00a310bn deal for anti-submarine warships built in UK | BAE Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Norway has agreed a \u00a310bn deal for anti-submarine warships that will be built in the UK, as the two countries plan joint operations in northern Europe to deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/16\/russian-spy-ship-escorted-away-from-internet-cables-in-irish-sea\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased Russian activity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/ministry-of-defence\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ministry of Defence<\/a> (MoD) said the agreement to build Type 26 frigates was the UK\u2019s biggest ever warship export deal by value, and Norway\u2019s biggest defence procurement deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It said that overall it would provide a \u00a310bn boost to the UK economy and support 4,000 jobs across the UK \u201cwell into the 2030s\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Type 26 frigates will be built at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/baesystems\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BAE Systems<\/a> shipyards in Glasgow, which are already constructing eight of the warships for the Royal Navy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis \u00a310bn deal is what our plan for change is about,\u201d said the UK prime minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/keir-starmer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keir Starmer<\/a>. \u201cCreating jobs, driving growth and protecting national security for working people. The export of our world-leading Type 26 frigates will do exactly that, supporting well-paid jobs up and down the United Kingdom, from apprentices to engineers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is estimated that the shipbuilding programme will support 432 businesses, including 103 in Scotland, 47 in the north-west of England and 35 in the West Midlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The deal also signals a strengthening of a long-term strategic relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/norway\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Norway<\/a>, as part of which a combined fleet of 13 frigates will operate jointly in northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Eight of the frigates will be British and \u201cat least\u201d five will be Norwegian, with the joint operation designed to \u201csignificantly strengthen Nato\u2019s northern flank\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis historic defence deal deepens our strategic partnership,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/john-healey\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Healey<\/a>, the defence secretary. \u201cWith Norway, we will train, operate, deter and \u2013 if necessary \u2013 fight together. Our navies will work as one, leading the way in Nato, with this deal putting more world-class warships in the north Atlantic to hunt Russian submarines, protect our critical infrastructure and keep both our nations secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Concerns over critical infrastructure around Europe have been raised on multiple occasions in the last year, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/dec\/27\/estonia-begins-naval-patrols-to-protect-cable-after-suspected-sabotage-finland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alleged sabotage of the Baltic gas pipeline and undersea internet cables<\/a> between Finland and Estonia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Norway was the only other country to participate in the UK carrier strike group\u2019s full deployment this year, and it also collaborates with the UK and Nato partners to safeguard critical undersea infrastructure in northern Europe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNorway and the United Kingdom are close allies with common interests and strong bilateral ties,\u201d said Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re, Norway\u2019s prime minister. \u201cI am confident that the strategic partnership with the UK for purchasing, developing and operating frigates is the right decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Scottish secretary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/ian-murray\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ian Murray<\/a>, said the decision showed the \u201ctremendous success\u201d of Scotland\u2019s shipbuilding industry and was an example of another \u201cdefence dividend\u201d for the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Type 26 frigate features sophisticated weapons, and advanced sensors and communications.
