We join ex-gunslinger Levi Jeans (Elder) on a journey to take revenge on his family’s killers, meeting an eclectic cast of Spaghetti Western stereotypes along the way. That’s it, really, but it’s a bare-bones plot that really allows the performers to shine and display their natural comedic talent. It’s a totally over-the-top, slapstick style comedy that perfectly fits the Western genre and had the audience laughing the whole way through.

Business Casual as a trio are incredibly entertaining to watch – it’s clear that the performers are having a great time onstage which is something that puts me as an audience member completely at ease. There is a lot of pressure on comedy shows and performers, especially in a high-stakes environment like the Edinburgh Fringe, but Business Casual didn’t falter for a second; they had

strong chemistry with each other and an instinct for comedic timing that carried them flawlessly through the entire show. The performances themselves were very strong; Elder was charming and likeable as lead cowboy Levi Jeans, while Lane and Saling showed an impressive display of clowning ability as they shifted between an entertaining cast of ensemble characters. The comedy was clever and ranged from physical comedy and slapstick to the more ridiculous, 3-point-parking horses and an extremely drawn-out death scene (involving a train, a shark and an eagle). Some of the references were dated, but overall the show was packed with solid-gold jokes (I should know, I tested them with my teeth). The lighting technician was laughing throughout, which is something I’ve personally never witnessed before and I think says everything about how entertaining this show was. I am looking forward to seeing which genre Business Casual takes on next.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Rating: 4 out of 5.

{🎟 PR Invite – Tickets gifted in EDINBURGH FRINGE

by phoebesgrove

Oscar Wilde meets Bottoms in this fun, feminist Victorian farce. “Well-behaved women seldom make history” wrote historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich in 1976. 30 Years on, the titular characters of Well Behaved Women are neither behaving nor making history. What they are doing is summoning ghosts and making situations go from bad to worse. Marianne (Aishling Jones) is a maid who dreams of being taken seriously as a writer. Emma (Jasmine Joseph) is a tutor torn between a single life of freedom and the approval and financial support of her family. Hattie (Evelyn Faber) is aristocratic, hedonistic, and technically their employer, … More WELL BEHAVED WOMEN – REVIEW – EDINBURGH FRINGE

MONSTERING THE ROCKETMAN – REVIEW – EDINBURGH FRINGE

by phoebesgrove

False journalism is the villain in Henry Naylor’s real-life modern-day campfire fable. Sometimes you can trick yourself into thinking that ‘fake news’ is entirely a modern problem, brought about by widespread access to social media and increasingly realistic AI imagery. However, in Henry Naylor’s monologue Monstering the Rocketman, we’re reminded that all it really takes to create a rumour is an eye-catching headline and absolutely no evidence at all. Naylor takes us back to The Sun newspaper office in the late 1980s, a seedy world of fast-talking cigar-smoking newspaper execs and moral ambiguity, where the truth is something that only … More MONSTERING THE ROCKETMAN – REVIEW – EDINBURGH FRINGE

THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME – REVIEW – EDINBURGH FRINGE

by phoebesgrove

A twisted and outrageously original take on the artist/muse relationship and the toll of mining trauma for art. Confessional work has always been popular. It’s no wonder that audiences are drawn to reality, to the thrill that only the words ‘based on a true story’ can give us. Hannah Caplan’s This is Not About Me unravels this obsession with confession from the other perspective, as we follow writer Grace (Amaia Naima Aguinaga) writes a play to process the end of her relationship with Eli (Francis Nunnery), a close friendship infused with a heavy dose of will-they-won’t-they. Comedy trio Business Casual (Jeremy Elder, Cory Peter Lane and Hunter Saling) present the Wild West as you have seen it many, many times before in Cowboys, is a hilarious blend of sketch and physical comedy.
