After nearly 600 people signed a petition to try and keep him on air, popular North East based radio star Simon Logan hosted his final show on BBC<\/a> Newcastle on Sunday. And it proved to be a rather emotional one as he thanked listeners for their support and told them he hoped to ‘catch them very soon.’<\/p>\n As reported by ChronicleLive<\/a> earlier this month, after significant changes to the landscape of local radio over the last six years, which saw the breakfast shows on both Heart and Capital North East get the chop and Metro Radio become Hits Radio, before its last remaining North East based broadcast, Steve and Karen’s Breakfast Show came to an end<\/a> earlier this year; Simon’s much listened to 80s and 90s show was set to be axed, to be replaced by an ‘All England’ national broadcast across all 39 local BBC stations.<\/p>\n The most listened to radio show in that time slot in all of the north, news that Simon’s programme was under serious threat saw people jump into action to try and save it and, before long, a petition launched on Change.org<\/a> had gathered 400 signatures, as people signed it and urged BBC bosses to rethink their decision. Sadly, despite that number then reaching nearly 600, Sunday, as scheduled, was to be Simon’s final 80s and 90s session, with the host taking the time to address those who’d been behind him.<\/p>\n Speaking at the end of the show, Simon, who also hosts a Retro Chart Show on North East based Pride Radio, said: ‘What is it they always say, all great things must come to an end. Whether you\u2019ve ever got in touch with the show or whether you have just listened to our show, thanks to everybody on our Facebook group, thanks to Nathan for \u2018putting it on the list\u2019, I couldn\u2019t have done it without you mate.’<\/p>\n He continued: ‘The time has come to say farewell, seriously, thanks for being there. We\u2019ve had a blast, haven\u2019t we? Hope to catch you really soon. And whatever you\u2019re doing tonight, always stay forever young. Ta-Ra\u201d.
