{"id":388392,"date":"2025-09-01T02:58:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T02:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/388392\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T02:58:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T02:58:13","slug":"historic-edinburgh-graveyards-forced-to-close-due-to-late-night-raves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/388392\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic Edinburgh graveyards forced to close due to late-night raves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  The Category A-listed site, Old Calton Burial Ground, and the nearby New Calton Burial Ground in the Scottish capital have both been the site of \u201cmany police incidents\u201d and growing anti-social behaviour as the local authority have been forced to intervene, according to the Scotsman.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Edinburgh City Council said both graveyards have been forced to close at night due to \u201ccave raves\u201d where young people have been underage drinking, drug-taking, and abusing the public and visitors.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Responding to a freedom of information (FOI) request from the Scotsman, the local authority confirmed the overnight closures and said it would \u201cfree up\u201d the operational police officers who patrolled the area.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/25428873.international-tournament-shows-scotland-hit-target-world-cup\/?rel=cl_lsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International tournament shows Scotland hit the target with \u2018World Cup\u2019<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Edinburgh City Council said: \u201cThe New Calton Burial Ground has been closed due to anti-social behaviour from young people, initially taking place in Old Calton cemetery, with many police incidents which led to the closure of the burial ground in evenings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThese were being presented as \u2018cave raves\u2019, with underage drinking, drug-taking and abuse of the public and visitors.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cOn discovering that Old Calton cemetery was locked, they moved on to carrying out their activities in New Calton cemetery which has facilitated the need to lock the burial ground overnight.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cClosure of the two cemeteries has also removed the need for operational police officers to be there at evenings and allowing them to be freed up for other duties.
