UK households with loft conversions face a \u00a390,000 bill – but they can reduce it by THOUSANDS<\/a>. The story of one man’s loft conversion has been shared widely on Sunday, after being highlighted in a national newspaper.<\/p>\n

Experienced DIYer Justin Sparrowhawk was shocked by contractors\u2019 prices \u2013 so he rolled up his sleeves and managed to cut the price from an eye-watering<\/a> \u00a390k to \u00a327,000.<\/p>\n

The dad, who lives in Worthing with his 12-year-old daughter, wanted to create a loft conversion to give her a more grown-up bedroom. \u201cWhen I got the quotes in I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d he says. \u201cI know prices have gone up but with what they were asking for I might as well just have moved house.<\/p>\n

“We aren\u2019t desperate for a fifth bedroom, it\u2019s a luxury really, and I wasn\u2019t going to remortgage the house to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe might as well move house,\u201d he says. After he got to work, it took him three weeks to remodel the room and make some real progress.<\/p>\n

He has spent \u00a320,000 doing it himself so far. He suspects the whole project will come in at around \u00a327,000, he told the Telegraph today.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a lesson there \u2013 stick to what you know,\u201d he says. \u201cYou have to make sure you know what you are doing, and understand the process,\u201d he says. \u201cApart from that you don\u2019t have to spend a fortune.<\/p>\n

“All it takes is a bit of time.\u201d He added how he hired a local roofing company and found his carpenter quite by chance in the local B&Q car park.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was there with his van so we got talking and I asked him to have a look,\u201d says Sparrowhawk. \u201cHe had been working for someone else for ten years, been out on his own for a year, knew all the technical terms \u2013 and he immediately spotted the tricky parts of my drawings.
