More than two weeks on from the Alaska summit between US president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin<\/strong>, the end of the war in Ukraine does not appear to be any closer.<\/strong><\/p>\n Trump claimed at the time that he was close to a breakthrough<\/strong> that could lead to a bilateral meeting between Putin<\/strong> and Ukraine\u2019s Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/strong><\/p>\n But that does not seem to be any closer either.<\/strong><\/p>\n Zelenskyy said last week that Ukraine<\/a> would \u201cremind everyone about it\u201d as Trump\u2019s semi-deadline of \u201ctwo, maybe three weeks\u201d symbolically expires today.<\/p>\n On Friday, French president Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> warned that if Putin missed the Monday deadline, it<\/strong> would be yet another example of him trying to \u2018play\u2019 Trump<\/strong> \u2013 something that, Macron said, could not go unanswered and should prompt further sanctions.<\/p>\n But attending a summit in China over the weekend, the Russian president repeated his hardline position<\/strong>, reiterating his opposition to Ukraine\u2019s plans to join Nato and calling for \u201ca fair balance in the security sphere,\u201d which is widely seen as shorthand for his expansive demands on Europe\u2019s security.<\/p>\n \u201cIn order for a Ukrainian settlement to be sustainable and long-term, the root causes of the crisis<\/strong>, which I have just mentioned and which I have repeatedly mentioned before, must be eliminated,<\/strong>\u201d Putin said.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Ukraine said it suspected Russian involvement in the murder of former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy <\/strong>over the weekend.<\/p>\n \u201cWe know that this crime was not accidental.<\/strong> There is a Russian involvement.
