The Telegraph critic, Ivan Hewett, named his <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/royal-liverpool-philharmonic-orchestra\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">10 favourite orchestras <\/a>and a upcoming concert and a recording that captures the essence of the musicians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/royal-liverpool-philharmonic-orchestra\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall <\/a>stands on the same site as the original venue before it was destroyed by a fire in 1933. The new building was opened in 1939 and the hall today remains home to the award-winning <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/royal-liverpool-philharmonic-orchestra\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra<\/a>, the UK\u2019s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The origins of the orchestra\u2019s concert series date back to the formation of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/royal-liverpool-philharmonic-orchestra\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Liverpool Philharmonic<\/a> by a group of music lovers in 1840. Through the generations, many of the musicians have seen the industry and city change around them, as well as life at the hall from its beginning to now being packed with multiple events throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Telegraph&#8217;s list includes regional and London orchestras, a chamber (small-scale) orchestra, one using period instruments for ancient classical music and a &#8220;radical new kid on the block&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">All of the orchestras have distinct characteristics, with Liverpool&#8217;s Royal Philharmonic Hall credited for its &#8220;daring programming&#8221; and &#8220;huge global audience&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Everton-FCs-Annual-General-Meeting-held-at-the-Philharmonic-HallLiverpool-city-centrePic-Andrew.jp.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall(Image: Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Ivan said: &#8220;The British orchestra with the longest unbroken tradition is the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, founded in 1840 by a group of amateurs who wanted to encourage \u201cthe Science and Practice of Music\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;Their enterprise was hardly plain sailing. Money was embezzled, the new concert hall wasn\u2019t always full, and celebrity performers, including Charles Dickens\u2019s theatre company, had to be booked to raise money.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;But spurred on by rivalry with the Hall\u00e9 in Manchester, the orchestra not only survived but thrived.
