They should have done so years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to Trump\u2019s comments, which follow the implementation of total duties as high as 50 per cent on Indian goods that have raised questions about the future of the US-India relationship.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Trump\u2019s remark came as Modi was in China for a summit of more than 20 leaders of non-Western countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a China-backed initiative given renewed impetus by Trump\u2019s global tariff offensive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"US President Donald Trump (right) speaks with India\u2019s Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House in February.
