{"id":389658,"date":"2025-09-01T16:32:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T16:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/389658\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T16:32:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T16:32:14","slug":"st-lukes-armagh-has-stood-at-heart-of-mental-health-for-200-years-armagh-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/389658\/","title":{"rendered":"St Luke\u2019s Armagh has \u2018stood at heart of mental health\u2019 for 200 years \u2013 Armagh I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1111\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/st-lukes-armagh.jpg\" class=\"attachment- size- wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has marked a significant milestone with a special event celebrating the 200th anniversary of St Luke\u2019s Hospital, Armagh.<\/p>\n<p>First opened in July 1825 as the Armagh District Lunatic Asylum, St Luke\u2019s was the first of a network of asylums established in Ireland to provide care for people living with mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Over two centuries later, it remains a landmark in the story of mental health, reflecting both the challenges and the progress made in care, treatment and understanding.<\/p>\n<p>The commemorative event held on Friday August 29, 2025, brought together staff, service users, community representatives and members of the public to reflect on this extraordinary history and the journey of mental health care.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-279215 size-full perfmatters-lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"1111\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/st-lukes-armagh-2.jpg\"  data-\/><\/p>\n<p>Those who attended had the opportunity to view historic photographs, posters and memorabilia detailing the hospital\u2019s past, alongside displays charting the development of mental health services over the last 200 years.<\/p>\n<p>Entertainment was provided by the Appleby SEC Makaton Choir, and a new commemorative plaque was unveiled at the front entrance of the main building, officially marking two centuries since the hospital first opened its doors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-279216 size-full perfmatters-lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"1111\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/st-lukes-armagh-1.jpg\"  data-\/><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the event, Jan McGall, Trust Director of Mental Health and Learning Disability, paid tribute to the generations of staff and patients connected with St Luke\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSt Luke\u2019s has stood at the heart of mental health care for two hundred years.
