{"id":389681,"date":"2025-09-01T16:46:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T16:46:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/389681\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T16:46:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T16:46:10","slug":"mosaic-by-suffolk-sculptor-elisabeth-frink-up-for-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/389681\/","title":{"rendered":"Mosaic by Suffolk sculptor Elisabeth Frink up for sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  Auctioneers Sworders\u00a0will be presiding over the\u00a0sale of the private collection of art dealer Ken Bolan on September 24.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It is entitled Ken Bolan: Nature Follows Form and features 400 lots from the legendary dealer who bought and sold antiques and design objects for more than 50 years.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eadt.co.uk\/newsletters\/business\/2351\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>SIGN UP HERE FOR YOUR DAILY BUSINESS BULLETIN<\/strong><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   style=\"width: 100%;\"\/>(Image: Sworders) The Monkey and the Dolphin\u00a0mosaic &#8211; based on the Aesop fable &#8211;\u00a0 leads the sale with an estimated value\u00a0of \u00a3300k to \u00a3500k.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Elisabeth Frink &#8211; who died in 1993 aged 62 &#8211; was brought up in Great Thurlow, near Bury St Edmunds close to RAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath air bases.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eadt.co.uk\/news\/25425062.auctioneers-gear-record-month-thousands-farm-lots-go-hammer\/?ref=ial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auctioneers gear up for record month as thousands of farm lots go under hammer<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The mosaic panel by Elisabeth Frink was designed around 1987 and once adorned the swimming pool of Woolland House at her Dorset country estate.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Mr Bolan\u00a0first met sculptor\u00a0when she visited his shop in Bath in 1986.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;At that time, I had just begun buying Swedish painted furniture which she absolutely adored,&#8221; he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;Over the next few months, after discovering my old brewery in Gillingham, she bought numerous painted items from me, and we developed a close friendship.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Following Frink\u2019s death in 1993, the art dealer\u00a0assisted her son, Lan, with the sale of the furnishings at Woolland, and later made the new owners an offer on the mosaic.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eadt.co.uk\/news\/25422891.brothers-sold-aspall-cider-business-taste-success-new-venture\/?ref=ial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brothers who sold Aspall cider business taste success with new venture<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It was subsequently professionally removed, restored and mounted on a 4.34 x 3.09m aluminium corrugated framework to\u00a0allow the mosaic to be laid back into a swimming pool or positioned upright as an artwork.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It is thought to be the only mosaic Frink created and among the largest pieces she ever made. \u2018\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It\u2019s all original. All the work you see is her work.
