{"id":38997,"date":"2025-04-21T18:34:21","date_gmt":"2025-04-21T18:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/38997\/"},"modified":"2025-04-21T18:34:21","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T18:34:21","slug":"five-historic-pools-one-day-edinburgh-swimmers-complete-victorian-pool-challenge-for-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/38997\/","title":{"rendered":"Five historic pools, one day: Edinburgh swimmers complete Victorian pool challenge for charity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        Swimmers from Leith Victoria Swim Centre completed their challenge on Easter Monday which was to visit and swim in all five of Edinburgh Leisure\u2019s Victorian pools in a single day.<\/p>\n<p>In completing the Victorian pool crawl the team has raised funds for the Active Communities programme run by Edinburgh Leisure.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_5983.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-594488\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The 14-member \u201cVictorian Pool Crawlers\u201d team swam up to one kilometre in each historic pool while walking approximately 16 kilometres between venues throughout the day. The challenge has raised more than \u00a3870, with donations still coming in through their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/campaign\/poolcrawl2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JustGiving<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Among the participants was 48-year-old Marek Bernat, who only learned to swim at Dalry Swim Centre in 2019. Originally from Poland, Bernat was motivated to learn after a frightening experience during a holiday in Bilbao, Spain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost my footing and tumbled down some stairs into water,\u201d Bernat recalled. \u201cThat\u2019s when I thought, \u2018I\u2019d better learn to swim.\u2019\u201d Now a regular at Leith Victoria Swim Centre\u2019s skills and drills class, Bernat\u2019s journey from non-swimmer to Victorian Pool Crawler exemplifies that it\u2019s never too late to learn a new skill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis challenge brought together our love for swimming with Edinburgh\u2019s incredible Victorian pool heritage,\u201d said Alistair Clark, the group\u2019s organiser. \u201cTo swim in all five historic venues in one day was physically demanding, but knowing we were raising vital funds for Active Communities kept us motivated. The programme helps thousands of people overcome barriers to physical activity, and we\u2019re proud to support such important work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_5991.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-594489\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Easily spotted in their day-glow, bright orange t-shirts and Edinburgh Leisure swim caps, the team attracted attention and support from other pool users throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh Leisure\u2019s Active Communities programme works to tackle inequalities and combat the effects of inactivity by providing opportunities for people facing the greatest barriers to physical activity, including those affected by health conditions, disabilities, inequalities, and poverty.
