With an average temperature, according to provisional statistics, of 16.06°C in Wales from June, July and August, the figures have beaten a record which stood for three decades.

Wales’ previous warmest summer was in 1995 when temperatures averaged 16.04°C. This year, the hottest day of the year came on July 12 when 33.1°C was recorded in Cardiff.

Last week also saw the hottest August bank holiday Monday temperature ever recorded. That followed the country’s driest spring in over 50 years. According to the Met Office, Wales had 79% of its average summer rainfall this summer.

It has led to some upsetting scenes of drought with stories accompanying those scenes including dried up canals and water-based events threatened.

The coming days are expected to bring some much-needed relief for farmers.
