{"id":392195,"date":"2025-09-02T15:22:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T15:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/392195\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T15:22:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T15:22:11","slug":"international-students-issued-text-warning-to-avoid-overstaying-visa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/392195\/","title":{"rendered":"international students issued text warning to avoid overstaying visa"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thousands of international students sent messages warning them that they will be \u201cremoved\u201d from the country if they have no legal right to remain once their visa has expired.<\/li>\n<li>Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stresses that \u201cabuse of the system\u201d will not be tolerated.<\/li>\n<li>Critics hit back at the policy, accusing the Labour party of kowtowing to populist anti-immigration sentiment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some 130,000 students and their families in total are due to be messaged via text or email reminding them that their visa is coming to an end, with an explicit warning that bogus asylum claims will be refused.<\/p>\n<p>The message, which has already been sent to 10,000 students, reads: \u201cIf you submit an asylum claim that lacks merit, it will be swiftly and robustly refused. Any request for asylum support will be assessed against destitution criteria. If you do not meet the criteria, you will not receive support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have no legal right to remain in the UK, you must leave. If you don\u2019t, we will remove you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It forms part of a raft of measures announced today to crack down on what the Home Office has called an \u201calarming\u201d increase in the number of international students applying for asylum when their visas are nearing expiry.<\/p>\n<p>In May, the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thepienews.com\/breaking-uk-graduate-route-reduced-to-18-months-under-immigration-white-paper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immigration white paper<\/a> took aim at this trend, pointing out that half of all asylum claims for people already in the UK on a legitimate visa route were people issued a study visa. However, a closer look at Home Office data shows that students only account for 16% of all asylum claims.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If you submit an asylum claim that lacks merit, it will be swiftly and robustly refused<br \/><strong>Text to international students<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking to BBC Breakfast this morning, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper claimed that some international students were applying for asylum \u201ceven when things haven\u2019t changed in their home country\u201d and staying in the UK for years afterwards, which then has a knock-on effect on existing asylum accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>She said that while the UK government wants to support \u201cgenuine refugees\u201d, students should not be claiming asylum at the end of their program if nothing has changed in their country while they have been studying abroad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to clamp down on that kind of abuse, and that\u2019s why we\u2019re sending these messages \u2013 to be very clear to people the asylum system is not for people who just want to extend their visas,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In response, the University and College Union general secretary, Jo Grady, called the measures an \u201cattack on international students\u201d that had \u201cvery little to do with visa overstays\u201d and more to to with the ruling Labour party \u201caping\u201d the anti-immigration Reform party, which has been gaining popularity in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018With [Reform leader Nigel] Farage talking up mass deportations and migrant prison camps, Labour continuing to demonise immigrants and refugees isn\u2019t just immoral, it\u2019s political suicide,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLabour will never outflank Reform on division and bigotry.
