Like their mother Princess Diana<\/a>, both Prince William<\/a> and Prince Harry<\/a> would enjoy chatting to staff casually in the kitchens of the royal households.\n<\/p>\n They also, like their late mom, loved a gossip and a tease with staffers \u2014 and one day, that may have gone too far.\n<\/p>\n Grant Harrold, a former butler to King Charles<\/a> and his sons, recalls, \u201cYou hear these stories about their mother and how she would go in the kitchens and sit on the worktops and have chats. What was nice about her boys is they were the same.”\n<\/p>\n “The nice thing about Kate<\/a> and William, and Harry, is they always thank people. The King [when he was Prince Charles] would too \u2014\u00a0he\u2019d be grateful. But they would always come and find you and thank you for what you\u2019d done,” he adds.\n<\/p>\n Prince William and Kate Middleton at RAF Cranwell in 2008.<\/p>\n Anwar Hussein\/Getty<\/p>\n Harrold \u2014\u00a0promoting his new book\u00a0The Royal Butler<\/a>, out Sept. 23, which chronicles his journey from working-class Scotland to serving the late Queen Elizabeth<\/a> \u2014\u00a0recalls one such chat where the conversation turned to aging.\n<\/p>\n “I said, ‘From a man\u2019s point of view, the worst is when you start receding, you start going bald,\u2019\u201d he remembers. “Kate started sniggering, and I looked over at William and he said, \u2018Thanks, Grant!\u2019 and leaned forward to show his hair.”\n<\/p>\n Highgrove House where Grant Harrold was talking to William and Kate.<\/p>\n Chris Jackson – WPA Pool\/Getty<\/p>\n But the prince was able to get back at the butler one day. Harrold had gone out and got a fake tan in Bath, a short drive away from Highgrove House \u2014 however, it didn’t go quite as planned. Serving dinner soon afterward, Charles and Camilla wondered what the strange smell was.\n<\/p>\n “Camilla was looking at me, just staring. [The King] said, \u2018What have you done? What color did you pick, \u2018Oompa Loompa?\u2019 ” Harrold recalls.\n<\/p>\n Former royal butler Grant Harrold.<\/p>\n The Royal butler\/X<\/p>\n Prince William and his then-girlfriend Kate saw him soon afterwards. \u201cWilliam said, \u2018What have you done? Has it gone everywhere?\u2019 and being told yes, he repeated, \u2018Everywhere?\u2019 I said it was ‘everywhere.’ He said, \u2018Can I see it?\u2019 ”\n<\/p>\n Harrold explains, “I had to take my shoes and socks off to show him my toes, which were orange!”\n<\/p>\n \u201cHe thought it was brilliant.
