{"id":392806,"date":"2025-09-02T20:45:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:45:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/392806\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T20:45:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:45:11","slug":"edinburgh-councillors-cant-challenge-gender-neutral-school-toilet-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/392806\/","title":{"rendered":"Edinburgh councillors &#8216;can\u2019t challenge&#8217; gender neutral school toilet changes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Edinburgh councillors have been told they have \u201cno option\u201d to challenge or refuse the removal of several gender neutral toilets in city schools as \u201cwe have to comply with the law\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A number of changes at schools have been proposed following the Supreme Court\u2019s judgement that, for the purposes of the Equality Act, the term \u2018sex\u2019 refers to a person\u2019s sex at birth only.<\/p>\n<p>The School Premises Regulations also stipulates that schools must have separate male and female toilets while the Equality Act says that there should also be a gender neutral provision.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Edinburgh\u2019s education, children and families committee heard on Tuesday from parents, teachers and equality campaigners who claim the changes will lead to stress, harassment and stigma for vulnerable children and young people.<\/p>\n<p>Ann Marriot, of LGBT Youth Scotland, told members that young people \u201cconsistently tell us that \u201cbathroom access is one of their biggest sources of stress\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany, many avoid food and drink \u2013 risking their health. Others hide who they are, out of fear of bullying,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that young people she works with had been \u201ctoo scared to come\u201d to the chambers to speak for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people are saying they don\u2019t want to go back to school;
