{"id":392909,"date":"2025-09-02T21:41:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T21:41:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/392909\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T21:41:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T21:41:15","slug":"circular-pictograma-winery-in-mexico-designed-to-echo-the-land","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/392909\/","title":{"rendered":"Circular Pictograma winery in Mexico designed to &#8220;echo the land&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mexican design studios <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/rojkind-arquitectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rojkind Arquitectos<\/a> and AMASA Estudio have collaborated to create a wheel-shaped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/wineries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winery<\/a> with radiating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/vaulted-ceilings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vaults<\/a> in Valle de Guadalupe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pictogramavino.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vin\u00edcola Pictograma<\/a> was completed in 2023, comprising 1,963 square metres (211,300 square feet) on a 35-acre vineyard on the north end of the Baja California peninsula<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242869 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rojkind-amasa-pictogramma-winery_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x998.jpg\" alt=\"Circular winery in Mexico from above\" width=\"2018\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Rojkind Arquitectos and AMASA Estudio designed a circular window in Mexico<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rojkindarquitectos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rojkind Arquitectos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amasaestudio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMASA Estudio<\/a>, both based in Mexico City, designed the earth-toned building to act as a dialogue between contemporary architecture and the wine region&#8217;s landscape.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Designed with an acute sensitivity to its surroundings, the project seamlessly integrates into the rugged terrain, ensuring minimal environmental impact while enhancing the winemaking experience,&#8221; the team told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242876 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rojkind-amasa-pictogramma-winery_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x578.jpg\" alt=\"Vauled structure around winery center\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1603\"  \/>It features an open-air courtyard in its centre<\/p>\n<p>The earth was built up around the building to submerge it into the ground. Visitors enter through a wedge-shaped opening on the north side of the ring, gathering in a circular courtyard at the centre of the round plan.<\/p>\n<p>Two rows of bubbled vaults ring the courtyard, containing the winery&#8217;s various production, storage, and hospitality spaces under burnt clay brick vaults.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242882 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rojkind-amasa-pictogramma-winery_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x662.jpg\" alt=\"Circular winery\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1838\"  \/>Vaulted forms contain the wineries various facilities<\/p>\n<p>Parabolic concrete arches form heavy pendulous portals into the tasting, bottling, barrel, and back-of-house spaces, while the eastern vault was removed to create an open-air garden.<\/p>\n<p>The layout maximises efficiency, reduces circulation space and promotes cross ventilation through the interior portico that is reminiscent of 16th-century architecture, the studio explained.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242885 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rojkind-amasa-pictogramma-winery_dezeen_2364_col_17-852x1065.jpg\" alt=\"Vaulted winery in Mexico\" width=\"1891\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It was designed to be an &#8220;immersive architectural experience&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The winery is not just a production facility \u2013 it is an immersive architectural experience,&#8221; the studio said. &#8220;The layout orchestrates a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, offering visitors a journey that moves from the intimate process of winemaking to expansive views of the vineyards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The palette of local sand-coloured concrete, weathered steel, red clay bricks, and timber was selected to age naturally, blending the building into the landscape.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242886 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rojkind-amasa-pictogramma-winery_dezeen_2364_col_18-852x914.jpg\" alt=\"Tree in vaulted winery structure\" width=\"2205\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Passive strategies were used for cooling<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every material at Pictograma was chosen to echo the land \u2014 not to mimic it, but to be in conversation with it,&#8221; the team said, noting the textured exterior concrete catches shadows and allows the surface of the building to change with the sun.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The palette is restrained, but intentional \u2014 every surface, every joint, meant to age with dignity and tell the story of place over time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2024\/12\/13\/cma-wine-storehouse-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/cma-wine-storehouse-france-sq_dezeen_2364_col_2-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Wine Storehouse by Carmen Maurice Architecture\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> CMA turns historic mill into &#8220;beacon&#8221; for Wine Storehouse on French vineyard\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building works to reduce its environmental impact with passive cooling strategies, thermal mass and strategic orientation \u2013 all of which align with the region&#8217;s push toward sustainable wine production.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Architecture is not just about buildings; it is about the hands that build them, the people who inhabit them, the lives they touch, and what they can give back to the community,&#8221; Rojkind said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2242872 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/rojkind-amasa-pictogramma-winery_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x539.jpg\" alt=\"Circular winery in Mexico\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1496\"  \/>Soil was piled up around the structure to submerge it partially<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our role as architects is to create environments that honor this interconnectedness, fostering inclusive, dynamic, and purpose-driven communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Rojkind Arquitectos unveiled the conceptual design for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2020\/10\/29\/ummara-resort-rojkind-arquitectos-amasa-estudio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resort<\/a> nearby with 28 villas embedded in the Valle de Guadalupe hills and a curvilinear swimming pool.
