but the plans have been opposed by some.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_JS375522027.jpg\" alt=\"Existing shops could be demolished to make way for the blocks (Image: planning documents)\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Existing shops could be demolished to make way for the blocks (Image: planning documents)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A developer has been urged to pull the plug on a \u00a31 billion proposal which includes building Greater Manchester\u2019s tallest skyscraper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The plan by Henley Investment Management aims to build 3,300 homes at Regent Retail Park off Regent Road in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/salford\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Salford<\/a>, but a decision on the development was postponed by the council\u2019s planning committee earlier this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The design includes a cluster of ten tower blocks, the biggest up to 273 metres or around 78 stories, which would make it the tallest tower in the region if built.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">During a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/decision-greater-manchesters-tallest-skyscraper-32079939\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">three-hour meeting on July 17<\/a>, councillors raised concerns about the impact the scheme could have on roads and services, especially in the inner-city Ordsall neighbourhood, leading to a vote to defer the application.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Fears were also heard about the potential loss of shops in the area if the plans were approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Today (September 2), Ordsall councillor Brendan Keville said Henley has \u201cfailed to listen to the local community\u201d and asked the firm to shelve the plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSince their original submission changes have been made to their application, however, these changes are not sufficient to make Henley\u2019s application acceptable for myself and local residents,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHenley should withdraw their application and work with residents to keep Regent Retail Park as a vital local shopping centre and an essential part of the local community and economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_JS375522024.jpg\" alt=\"Regent Retail Park has been earmarked for the new homes.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Regent Retail Park has been earmarked for the new homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Coun Keville, who sits on the council\u2019s cabinet team as an executive support member on housing matters, also wrote to Salford\u2019s planning committee today with his concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In a letter seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service he wrote: \u201cThe application transport assessment narrowly focusses on the immediate site and does not sufficiently consider the wider impact for transport and problem parking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cOrdsall is a key strategic location which lacks sufficient public transport particularly located next to major congested roads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spokesperson from Henley Investment Management responded: \u201cWe\u2019re disappointed by calls to withdraw our planning application, particularly given it is fully policy compliant and was recommended for approval by planning officers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cOur ambition remains to deliver 3,300 new homes for Salford, including 20 per cent affordable housing &#8211; aligned with national policy to drive growth and deliver 1.5 million homes across the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve worked hard to reflect local priorities, including affordable homes, green space and a community hub.
