{"id":393184,"date":"2025-09-03T00:11:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/393184\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T00:11:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T00:11:17","slug":"ireland-intervenes-after-gaza-activist-national-beaten-by-german-police-protests-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/393184\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland intervenes after Gaza activist national beaten by German police | Protests News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">Kitty O\u2019Brien attended a demonstration in Berlin last week to protest against Israel\u2019s targeted killing of Palestinian journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 2 Sep 20252 Sep 2025<\/p>\n<p>Officials in the Republic of Ireland have expressed deep concern after an Irish activist living in Germany was punched in the face by a police officer during a pro-Palestinian demonstration last week in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>Kitty O\u2019Brien, 25, is recovering in hospital after sustaining injuries that required surgery, reported The Irish Times on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Irish Bloc Berlin, an Irish protest group, said O\u2019Brien\u2019s arm was broken in the incident, according to Irish public broadcaster RTE.<\/p>\n<p>Video on social media showed a police officer punching O\u2019Brien twice in the face during Thursday\u2019s demonstration, leaving her bleeding heavily, and showing blood on her hands to the police in the melee.<\/p>\n<p>Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Ireland\u2019s prime minister, said he was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d by what he called an \u201cunacceptable\u201d assault.<\/p>\n<p>Maeve Collins, Ireland\u2019s ambassador to Germany, expressed \u201cconcern\u201d to local authorities over the incident on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a statement saying that it is \u201caware of the incident in question\u201d and that \u201cthe Ambassador in Berlin and senior officials in the Department have conveyed our concern about the incident to the German authorities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland has taken one of the strongest stances against Israel\u2019s atrocities in Gaza, both diplomatically and within the European Union, as well as culturally.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the Irish rap band Kneecap have become renowned globally for their stance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/video\/newsfeed\/2025\/6\/29\/uk-police-investigate-glastonbury-performers-who-led-pro-palestine-chants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against Israel\u2019s assault on Gaza<\/a>, which has killed more than 63,000 people and reduced much of the enclave to rubble since it began in October 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Germany has remained one of Israel\u2019s staunchest supporters in the international community, along with the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-3913683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/AA-20250828-38952978-38952961-POLICE_OFFICER_USES_FORCE_AGAINST_PROPALESTINIAN_PROTESTERS_IN_BERLIN_.jpeg\" alt=\"Clashes broke out during a pro-Palestinian demonstration at Hackescher Markt in Berlin, Germany on August 28, 2028. \" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/>Clashes broke out during a pro-Palestinian demonstration at Hackescher Markt in Berlin, Germany on August 28, 2028, when police officers used force against Irish citizen Kitty O\u2019Brien, pictured here falling to the ground [\u0130lkin Eskipehlivan\/Anadolu Agency]<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>German opposition politicians and campaigners say the incident is part of a wider pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Vasili Franco, a Green Party state politician, accused Berlin\u2019s governing Mayor Kai Wegner of backing a \u201chard-line approach towards demonstrators\u201d and refusing investigations in the past.<\/p>\n<p>German-Moroccan writer and activist Mohamed Amjahid said the case marked a \u201cnew escalation\u201d of police-demonstrator clashes since the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attacks on southern Israel and Israel\u2019s ensuing genocidal war on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2025\/9\/2\/live-israel-kills-17-palestinians-in-gaza-since-dawn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gaza<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have been given carte blanche to do whatever they want and a lot of police officers feel, individually and collectively, very safe in punching somebody with no consequences,\u201d Amjahid told The Irish Times.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other European countries, Germany does not have an independent police ombudsman.
