{"id":393960,"date":"2025-09-03T07:15:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T07:15:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/393960\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T07:15:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T07:15:14","slug":"pedestrian-subway-to-close-permanently-from-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/393960\/","title":{"rendered":"Pedestrian subway to close permanently from today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The closure comes ahead of a project to radically transform a major river crossing<\/p>\n<p>12:43, 01 Sep 2025Updated 06:37, 03 Sep 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_AMR_010925_SubwayClosed_05.jpg\" alt=\"The Redcliffe Hill subway will close from today (September 1)\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>The Redcliffe Hill subway will close from today (September 1)(Image: Bristol Live)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The subway that runs underneath Redcliff Hill is set to permanently close today (September 1) for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bristol-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bristol City Council<\/a> to create separate cycle lanes and plant new trees ahead of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/exactly-how-major-changes-bedminster-10034745\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bedminster Bridges project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council will also widen and upgrade a nearby pedestrian crossing between Redcliffe Sixth Form Centre and the Mercure Bristol Holland House Hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Signs were placed outside each entrance to the subway announcing it would be closed at the end of August, one of which had been tagged with graffiti. A few shopping trolleys were abandoned inside the underpass, which was still accessible on the morning of September 1.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_AMR_010925_SubwayClosed_03.jpg\" alt=\"The Redcliffe Hill subway will close from today (September 1)\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The subway was a sad sight on Monday morning(Image: Bristol Live)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The subway closure comes ahead of the start of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bedminster\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bedminster<\/a> Bridges project, a multi million pound scheme which will radically transform the major crossing over the River Avon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The main change will be the removal of the roundabout and the creation of two separate two-way bridges, the western bridge for buses only and the eastern one for other traffic. Cyclists and scooters will also be moved off the road onto separate cycle lanes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">York Road on the south side of the river recently reopened to traffic one way, from <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/bath-and-north-east-somerset\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bath<\/a> Road towards Bedminster, having been closed since July 2024. The road is not expected to fully reopen until Spring 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/delays-warning-work-major-bristol-10292311\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bath New Bridge has also been closed<\/a> apart from one lane for repair works since July, with that closure also expected to last until Spring next year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_AMR_010925_SubwayClosed.jpg\" alt=\"Signs have been places at each entrance to the subway, announcing the closure\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Signs have been places at each entrance to the subway, announcing the closure(Image: Bristol Live)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Langton Street Bridge, otherwise known as <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/new-look-banana-bridge-reopens-10279333\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">the Banana Bridge<\/a> which is located between Bath New Bridge and the Bedminster Bridge roundabout, reopened in June after restoration works, five months ahead of schedule.
