{"id":394707,"date":"2025-09-03T14:07:31","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T14:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/394707\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T14:07:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T14:07:31","slug":"bury-st-edmunds-professional-golfer-alfie-halil-and-veterans-from-the-1st-battalion-royal-anglian-regiment-complete-three-peaks-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/394707\/","title":{"rendered":"Bury St Edmunds professional golfer Alfie Halil and veterans from the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment complete Three Peaks Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A young professional golfer, now in remission from cancer, has completed a tough 24-hour challenge for a charity close to his heart.<\/p>\n<p>Alfie Halil, 24, of <a href=\"https:\/\/suffolknews.co.uk\/bury-st-edmunds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bury St Edmunds<\/a>, was amongst a group of fund-raisers who completed the Three Peaks Challenge last week.<\/p>\n<p>A team of his friends, and veterans from the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment, tackled the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales, finishing with 30 minutes to spare.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1544 1158\" alt=\"The team including Alfie and Ian who took on the challenge, ascending more than 10,000ft. Picture: Submitted<\/p>\n<p>Alfie chose to take on the three peaks to continue his fund-raising for the Addenbrooke\u2019s Charitable Trust.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Alfie was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, aged 20.<\/p>\n<p>Now in remission for three years, he had already raised more than \u00a320,000, as his way of giving something back to Ward C9, where he was treated.<\/p>\n<p>Alfie has continued to spread the word about cancer in teenagers and young adults &#8211; following the advice of his consultant, who told him: \u201cThe best thing you can do is keep talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1500 1129\" alt=\"Ian (far left), Tom (middle) and Alfie (back right) on part of the walk. Picture: Submitted<\/p>\n<p>His mum, Lorraine Halil, said: \u201cEveryone on C9 was amazing, caring for Alfie during Covid times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were really fortunate that Alfie\u2019s cancer hadn\u2019t spread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe, his dad and his younger brother are beyond proud of Alfie\u2019s fund-raising,\u201d said Lorraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really important to give back and be grateful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn&#8217;t a nice thing to go through, but it is good that something positive can come from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 2032 1463\" alt=\"The team climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within 24 hours. Picture: Submitted<\/p>\n<p>Lorraine was keen to praise family friend Ian \u2018Robbo\u2019 Robinson, 57, who helped Alfie arrange the walk and did his own fund-raising for the Royal Anglian Regiment Charity.<\/p>\n<p>Ian, of Kentford, who was a major in the 1st Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment, walked with fellow veterans.<\/p>\n<p>Thanking those who donated and sent messages of support, he said: \u201cWe are over the moon to have completed the challenge and so pleased we have reached our fund-raising target.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge itself was tough but rewarding- the team dynamic really helped us get through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the older veterans to have Alfie and his younger mates with us was a real boost and encouraged us to work harder,\u201d said Ian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHearing about Alfie\u2019s battle against cancer was inspirational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ian also thanked EMG, Rent Direct and Getaway Cars who supplied vehicles free of charge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 1572 1184\" alt=\"The team setting off from Ben Nevis.
