{"id":394783,"date":"2025-09-03T14:50:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T14:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/394783\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T14:50:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T14:50:12","slug":"end-of-peak-rail-fares-a-green-win-for-everyone-in-lothian-the-nen-north-edinburgh-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/394783\/","title":{"rendered":"End of peak rail fares a Green win for everyone in Lothian\u00a0 \u2013 The NEN \u2013 North Edinburgh News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>GREEN WIN AS WE SAY GOODBYE TO\u00a0 PEAK RAIL FARES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nen.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GREENS-RAIL-FARES.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"544\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GREENS-RAIL-FARES.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-212573\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>The abolition of peak rail fares is a huge win for commuters and climate, says Lorna Slater, the Scottish Green MSP for Lothian<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The policy was first introduced as a pilot project, which was secured by the Scottish Greens in 2023 while they were in Government, but it was soon dropped by the SNP in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In the year between the pilot project ending and the Scottish Government permanently introducing the Green policy for cheaper rail fares, commuters across Scotland\u2019s largest cities have forked out thousands of pounds to travel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">At present, people from Glasgow<strong>\u00a0had to spend \u00a332 t<\/strong>o get a train to\u00a0<strong>Edinburgh<\/strong>. Now that peak rail fares are scrapped, this will be reduced by 48%\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nen.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Lorna-Slater-headshot2-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lorna-Slater-headshot2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-201639\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Lorna Slater MSP for Lothian said: \u201cThis is a really welcome change and one that Greens worked hard to deliver.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI am delighted that the Scottish Government has agreed to remove this unfair tax on workers, students and regular travellers. For too long, peak rail fares have penalized people who often have no say on when and where they need to travel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cCommuters in Lothian will save hundreds, if not thousands of pounds per year from peak rail fares ending permanently. I hope that this will encourage more people to leave their cars at home and catch the train, making our roads safer and doing their part for the planet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTravel shouldn\u2019t cost the earth.
