{"id":394828,"date":"2025-09-03T15:13:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T15:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/394828\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T15:13:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T15:13:13","slug":"irish-exports-to-us-surged-to-e75bn-ahead-of-tariffs-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/394828\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish exports to US surged to \u20ac75bn ahead of tariffs \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Ireland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/trade\/\">trade<\/a> surplus with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a> soared in the first half of the year as firms rushed products across the Atlantic in advance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us-tariffs\/\">anticipated tariff hikes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">T\u00e1naiste and Minister for Trade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/simon-harris\/\">Simon Harris<\/a> will update Cabinet on export figures on Wednesday, while warning that Irish exporters continue to be negatively impacted by the changed trading environment with the US, even in light of a deal agreed between Washington and Brussels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Since August 7th, a 15 per cent tariff has been in effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to figures he will present to Cabinet, Irish exports to the end of June surged to \u20ac75.4 billion, \u20ac41.7 billion higher than for the same period in 2024 as firms increased exports in anticipation of higher tariffs. More was exported in the first half of the year than in the entirety of 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">With US imports stable, the trade surplus with the US has increased from \u20ac22.4 billion to \u20ac64.4 billion for the first half of the year \u2013 higher than the \u20ac50 billion trade surplus for the entirety of 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The main driver of the increase has been pharmaceuticals. Mr Harris will also tell Cabinet that the forthcoming budget has to take measures to help businesses facing economic uncertainty. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/economy\/2025\/08\/06\/tariffs-what-do-trumps-latest-pharma-threats-mean-for-ireland\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tariffs: what do Trump\u2019s latest pharma threats mean for Ireland?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Meanwhile, Cabinet will be told that the use of DNA samples by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/an-garda-siochana\/\">garda\u00ed<\/a> in investigations grew by almost 40 per cent last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Justice Jim O\u2019Callaghan will tell Ministers there is an increasing emphasis on the use of DNA in Irish criminal justice cases, reflected in the growth of the criminal justice database maintained by the State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 2024 report shows an increase in the size of the database, with the number of profiles held reaching 83,500, an increase of 12 per cent on the previous year. Mr O\u2019Callaghan will brief his colleagues on the database assisting in 1,000 investigations last year, an increase of nearly 40 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Culture and Sport, Patrick O\u2019Donovan, meanwhile, will brief Cabinet on the annual reports of the Chester Beatty library and the Digital Hub Development Agency, as well as the development of the velodrome and badminton centre at the national sports centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/08\/08\/irish-exporters-told-to-shut-their-mouths-over-trump-tariffs\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Irish exporters \u2018told to shut their mouths\u2019 over Trump tariffsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He will seek approval for \u20ac100 million for the sports projects, which are to feature a 250 metre cycling track, 12 badminton courts and spectator seating.
