{"id":395002,"date":"2025-09-03T16:43:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T16:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/395002\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T16:43:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T16:43:09","slug":"steep-rise-in-us-citizens-seeking-asylum-in-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/395002\/","title":{"rendered":"Steep rise in US citizens seeking asylum in Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been a steep rise in the number of citizens of the US seeking asylum in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-one people from the US applied for international protection in the first half of this year, more than in 2023 and 2024 combined.<\/p>\n<p>New figures from the Department of Justice show that 104 American citizens have looked for asylum in Ireland since the beginning of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, there were 13 total applications and in 2023, that rose to 18.<\/p>\n<p>During the course of last year, there were 22 applications for international protection from citizens of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>However, the figures have risen sharply since President Donald Trump won a second term in the White House, even as overall application numbers have dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Between January and March of this year, there were 24 asylum claims from US citizens, more than in the entirety of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>From April to June, a further 27 Americans sought international protection, according to data that was released under Freedom of Information laws.<\/p>\n<p>In the same period, there has been a sharp drop in the overall number of applications being made in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>During 2024, there were 18,561 total applications made for international protection, more than 1,500 per month.<\/p>\n<p>One in five of these were made by people from Nigeria, with Jordan making up 15.5% of that year&#8217;s claims.<\/p>\n<p>Other countries from which there were a large number of applications included Pakistan, Somalia and Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the total figure by the end of July was 7,208, just over 1,000 a month.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice has attributed the fall in claims to an increased number of deportations and speeded up processing of claims.<\/p>\n<p>Several countries have also been designated as &#8220;safe&#8221;, which means that asylum claims can be accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration sources said that any individual seeking international protection from the United States was likely to face an uphill battle.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The number of claims from the US is small in terms of the volume of applications being made overall,&#8221; a source said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, an American citizen &#8211; like any other applicant &#8211; would have to prove they came here to escape harm and demonstrate a well-founded fear for their safety if they returned.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Reporting: Ken Foxe<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There has been a steep rise in the number of citizens of the US seeking asylum in Ireland.&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":395003,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5311],"tags":[49,978,659],"class_list":{"0":"post-395002","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-united-states","8":"tag-united-states","9":"tag-us","10":"tag-usa"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/115141372113695386","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/395002","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=395002"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/395002\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/395003"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=395002"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=395002"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=395002"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
