Three years after Prince Harry and Meghan’s controversial docu-series about their love story<\/a> premiered on Netflix, the streaming giant has turned its focus to another, but equally polarising, royal couple.<\/p>\n

Norway’s \ufeffPrincess M\u00e4rtha Louise<\/a> and her American husband Shaman Durek Verrett are the stars of a new feature documentary titled Rebel Royals: An Unlikely Love Story.<\/p>\n

The film is likely to cause a stir in the princess’ home country, one year after their three-day wedding extravaganza<\/a> that was \ufeffattended by royals from Norway and Sweden and guests from across the world\ufeff.<\/p>\n

“Marrying into the royal family, it’s just very, very surreal,” Verrett says in the first-look trailer, released on Thursday morning in Australia.<\/p>\n

“I would like a royal wedding. Because I’m going to be a royal.”<\/p>\n

Princess M\u00e4rtha Louise is the eldest daughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja<\/a>. Her brother is Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to the throne.<\/p>\n

Princess M\u00e4rtha Louise is currently fourth in the line of succession.<\/p>\n

The King \u2013 who is currently Europe’s oldest-reigning monarch at age 88 \u2013 attended the wedding with Queen Sonja and the Crown Prince family, including Princess Ingrid Alexandra.<\/p>\n

Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 21, is currently living in Australia<\/a> and doing a three-year bachelor degree at the University of Sydney, which she began in late August.<\/p>\n

Princess \ufeffM\u00e4rtha Louise and Verrett celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary at the weekend, tying the knot at the the \ufeffhistoric Hotel Union in Geiranger, in Norway’s fjord region.<\/p>\n

Theirs was the first royal wedding in Norway in 22 years, since that of Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit.<\/p>\n

One of the first events across the three-day celebration was a party with a “sexy and cool” theme.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In the lead up to the wedding, many in Norway viewed the spectacle with apprehension with some believing it would have damaging repercussions on the royal family.<\/p>\n

‘First Black man marrying into the royal family’\ufeff<\/p>\n

Days before, Norwegian broadcaster NRK published a poll showing support for the royal family had fallen for the second time in a year, with many citing the relationship between Princess M\u00e4rtha and Verrett \ufeffas being to blame.\ufeff<\/p>\n

“The press doesn’t like me,” Verrett says in the trailer. “It’s not easy being the first Black man marrying into the European royal family and I’m the first.”<\/p>\n

He also speaks about the first time he met \ufeffM\u00e4rtha Louise’s parents.<\/p>\n

“When I met the queen and king, they were just staring at me. Martha didn’t give me any clues on anything. She’s like, ‘just be yourself’.”<\/p>\n

‘He is dangerous…I am brainwashed’\ufeff<\/p>\n

Princess \ufeffM\u00e4rtha Louise is featured in the trailer and addresses the controversy surrounding their relationship.<\/p>\n

“The royal family is very very loved [in Norway],” M\u00e4rtha Louise says.<\/p>\n

Referring to the press and public’s reaction to her engagement to Verrett she says: “They were like, who is this man and who is taking our princess?\ufeff’<\/p>\n

“Because he is a Shaman they say he is dangerous for the royal family and that I am brainwashed.<\/p>\n

“A lot of people expected me to be a certain way\ufeff an live up to what I’m supposed to be. And I don’t.”<\/p>\n

The voice of an unnamed royal commentator is heard throughout the trailer.<\/p>\n

“In Norway, our princess is the biggest celebrity,” the commentator says.<\/p>\n

“This is not how we usually see our royals. We don’t know what [Verrett] wants. But we think he made his way through the princess to get into the royal family. He’s maybe a scam artist.”<\/p>\n

Verrett describes himself as a shaman and a healer on his website and both he and M\u00e4rtha Louise have been criticised for promoting alternative health care methods.<\/p>\n

M\u00e4rtha Louise and Verrett’s relationship has been at the centre of headlines for years, mainly because of their lifestyle beliefs.\ufeff<\/p>\n

‘Princess’ title no-where to be seen\ufeff<\/p>\n

In 2022, M\u00e4rtha Louise agreed to stop using her ‘princess’ title for her commercial endeavours after a long-running disagreement with the royal family.\ufeff She no longer carries out official engagements representing the King.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Netflix documentary does not refer to her by her ‘princess’ title in the trailer or any of the press materials, instead describing M\u00e4rtha Louise as “Norwegian king’s eldest child”.<\/p>\n

Since his relationship with M\u00e4rtha Louise was made public, Verrett has also faced racist attacks.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the royal family \u2013 when announcing the changes to \ufeff M\u00e4rtha Louise’s role and title \u2013 condemned the racism directed online at Verrett.<\/p>\n

When they married, the film crew from Netflix was seen covering the spectacle.\ufeff<\/p>\n

A statement from the streamer said: “The film follows the couple as they prepare for their wedding, seek spiritual guidance, and navigate a media storm”.<\/p>\n

Director Rebecca Chaiklin said: “M\u00e4rtha Louise and Shaman Durek were two completely unexpected, wild, and charismatic characters from totally different worlds, navigating a swirl of controversy and fighting for love.<\/p>\n

“It was a great fish-out-of-water story \u2013 and they were so funny. So I just had to convince them (and the spirits) that I was ‘lit’ enough to be the one to tell their story.”<\/p>\n
