{"id":396002,"date":"2025-09-04T01:31:26","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T01:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/396002\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T01:31:26","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T01:31:26","slug":"spat-between-council-and-hollywood-actor-over-hopwood-hall-could-hit-high-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/396002\/","title":{"rendered":"Spat between council and Hollywood actor over Hopwood Hall could hit High Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An exclusivity agreement between the two ended last autumn &#8211; sending shockwaves through the community<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_image-33.png\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Hopwood DePree<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">A spat between a Hollywood actor and Rochdale council over control of historic Hopwood Hall could go to the High Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Hopwood DePree was leading the redevelopment of the Grade II*-listed site until the town hall cut ties with him last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Now the man who swapped California for Middleton has said he has \u2018no choice\u2019 but to file legal proceedings against the local authority, which owns the site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The long-running saga began over a decade ago when the American crossed the pond in a bid to restore the ancestral home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">To see planning applications; traffic and road diversions and layout changes; and more, visit the Public Notices Portal <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/publicnoticeportal.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"HERELink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Excitement was building in 2017 as the council entered into an \u2018exclusivity agreement\u2019 with Mr DePree, who vowed to restore the 1420s hall. That exclusivity agreement came to an end on October 31 last year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_The-Grade-II-listed-Hopwood-Hall-in-Middleton.jpg\" alt=\"Progress made on historic Hopwood Hall despite it being the centre of a HUGE spat\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Progress made on historic Hopwood Hall despite it being the centre of a HUGE spat(Image: Rochdale Council)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The council said the US-born Middletonian had not made enough progress and wanted to speak to other investors, which the exclusivity agreement prevented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr DePree said he believed he had a \u2018legally binding agreement to purchase Hopwood Hall\u2019, which the council disputes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Once the exclusivity agreement came to an end, the site was locked to volunteers involved in the project. The relationship between the council and the redevelopment team soured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Hundreds of locals flocked to Smalley Memorial Hall for a public meeting on November 20. Members of the \u2018Friends of Hopwood Hall\u2019 group delivered passionate speeches on the unravelling situation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Hopwood-DePree-at-the-Smalley-Memorial-Hall-public-meeting-in-Middleton.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>(Image: Copyright Unknown)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Rochdale council said a number of health and safety breaches led them to close off the site. As the owner, issues on the site are the town hall\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Speaking on the legal challenge, Hopwood DePree said: \u201cOver three months ago, my legal team sent Rochdale council yet another detailed letter setting out our position and Rochdale Council asked for more time to respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cFinally, on August 19, 2025 Rochdale council came back to say that they didn\u2019t need to tell us their full position on the agreement but if we didn\u2019t accept that they were right, they would consider legal action against me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cSo after almost 11 months of trying to work with Rochdale council to find a resolution, not to mention them allowing all the community volunteers\u2019 work in the gardens falling back into rack and ruin, and us having eventually obtained some evidence of shocking conduct by the council through FOI (freedom of information) and SAR (subject access request), we were left with no choice but to sue Rochdale council in the High Court of Justice to force them to honour our agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2_JS355735392.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>US film producer Hopwood DePree inspects the interior of Hopwood Hall, his family&#8217;s ancestral home which dates from the 15th century, which he is in the process of restoring, in Middleton, northern England on November 28, 2022. &#8211; As a child, Hopwood DePree had heard family stories about owning a castle in England but never took them too seriously.
