{"id":396428,"date":"2025-09-04T05:23:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T05:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/396428\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T05:23:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T05:23:17","slug":"henning-larsen-pavilion-uses-outdoor-cooling-to-provide-relief-from-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/396428\/","title":{"rendered":"Henning Larsen pavilion uses &#8220;outdoor cooling&#8221; to provide relief from heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/henning-larsen-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henning Larsen<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/university-of-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Pennsylvania<\/a> have installed a modular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/pavilions-tag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pavilion<\/a> on Governors Island in New York that radiates cool air for an AC alternative in public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Located a 10-minute walk from Governor&#8217;s Island&#8217;s ferry terminal, The KlimaKover pavilion is composed of several silver-clad, cooling panels that support an expansive roof made of wooden units covered in fabric shading.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243163 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/klimakover-governors-island-henning-larsen-university-of-pennsylvania_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Radiant heat reader\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Henning Larsen and the University of Pennsylvania have collaborated on a pavilion located on Governor&#8217;s Island in New York<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/henninglarsen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henning Larsen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.design.upenn.edu\/tal\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the\u00a0Thermal Architecture Lab<\/a> at the University of Pennsylvania and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ailresearchinnovate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AIL Research<\/a> created the pavilion in light of rising global heatwaves, which can prove dangerous to the public if left exposed.<\/p>\n<p>Powered by a rooftop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/solar-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">solar panel<\/a>, the pavilion employs radiant cooling to provide relief from heat exposure and uses &#8220;70 per cent less energy than traditional AC&#8221; according to its team.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243173 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/klimakover-governors-island-henning-larsen-university-of-pennsylvania_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1278.jp.jpeg\" alt=\"Henning Larsen pavilion\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Protective and cooling panels sit on a concrete base. The photo is by Hanzhong Luo.<\/p>\n<p>Placed atop a concrete foundation, its four cooling panels intersect at the centre of the pavilion, where transparent silver membranes contain &#8220;microtubes&#8221; laced with chilled water.<\/p>\n<p>The technology, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2001678117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">membrane-assisted radiant cooling<\/a>\u00a0draws heat from people&#8217;s bodies to cool them within 5 to 7 minutes, with the effect fully &#8220;pronounced&#8221; after 20 minutes, according to the team.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/08\/28\/air-conditioning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/air-con-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Building fixed with air-conditioning units\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Can we quit our air-con addiction?\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While radiant cooling is not as well-known as radiant heating, it relies on a similar concept,&#8221; said the University of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal is to create zones where people feel cool as the panels draw heat away from their bodies.
