{"id":396446,"date":"2025-09-04T05:32:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T05:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/396446\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T05:32:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T05:32:19","slug":"darlington-plea-to-cut-single-use-plastic-and-reduce-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/396446\/","title":{"rendered":"Darlington plea to cut single-use plastic and reduce waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/local\/darlington\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darlington<\/a> Borough Council officials have outlined plans to reduce plastic consumption and remove the products from all buildings and services.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The initiative was prompted by growing public awareness of plastic pollution and the increasing waste disposal costs.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A report read: \u201cOur catering outlets in Hopetown, the Hippodrome, and Dolphin Centre are already abiding by the legal requirements of no plastic cutlery or straws and are going further to source cups and plates that are not single-use plastic.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe Town Hall still uses plastic cups in the committee room and council chamber area.\u00a0 These are costing us, both in terms of purchase and in disposal.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Council catering outlets are already reducing their use of single-use plastics and the local authority\u2019s partners and suppliers will be encouraged to do the same.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Three principles to reduce the dependence on single-use plastic and encourage others to take action include leading by example, working with suppliers and contractors, and supporting Darlington.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Where the use of plastics is unavoidable, the council will encourage the use of recycled plastics, supporting manufacturers that make products from locally sourced waste plastics.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  All council staff and councillors will also be encouraged to use reusable water bottles or cups.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The report said the council will \u201ccontinue to support local communities by sharing best practice, raising awareness, supporting and promoting positive initiatives, campaigns and actions for reducing waste.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>  Recommended reading:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n  It added: \u201cClimate change is a corporate priority.\u00a0 Public scrutiny in this area is growing, and we should consider and set out the climate impacts of decisions.\u00a0 Single-use plastic has a direct impact on carbon emissions.\u00a0 By reducing our use of it, we are demonstrating our commitment to action.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Councillors will consider the new single-use plastic policy at a cabinet meeting on September 9.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2023, the Government announced plans to replace single-use plastics with different materials or reusable alternatives.
