An 11-year-old from Co Louth, who is in remission from acute myeloid leukaemia, had his wish to meet his idol Shane Lowry granted yesterday.<\/p>\n

D\u00e1ire Coyle received his first set of golf clubs from Santa last Christmas and has been practising with his dad, who described it as a \u201cdream come true\u201d for his son to meet the golfing great in Kildare before the Amgen Irish Open got under way at The K Club.<\/p>\n

Acute myeloid leukaemia is a rare cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood.<\/p>\n

Make-A-Wish Ireland put the plans in place for D\u00e1ire to meet Lowry.<\/p>\n

They met during the Pro-Am at The K Club yesterday and played the ninth hole together. D\u00e1ire took the putts for the golfer as he asked Lowry (38) about his career and how long he planned to continue playing for.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis wish has meant the absolute world to D\u00e1ire, who gave it an 11 out of 10,\u201d the boy\u2019s father, David, said.<\/p>\n

D\u00e1ire, who enjoyed his first ride in a golf buggy through the course, was also joined by his mother Orla and brothers Eoin (16) and Donal (13), with the Coyle family staying at the Westgrove Hotel in Clane where they were greeted by a surprise hamper of golf-themed goodies.<\/p>\n

We were treated like royalty from beginning to end<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cMeeting Shane Lowry has been a dream come true. Golf is a big thing for our family and without Make-A-Wish we never would have had this opportunity,\u201d Mr Coyle said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe not only got to experience the Amgen Irish Open, but we were also treated like royalty from beginning to end. Nothing was too much trouble.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing the happiness on D\u00e1ire\u2019s face is something we will never forget. We\u2019re so grateful to Make-A-Wish and everyone involved for giving us this gift as a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Make-A-Wish Ireland chief executive Susan McQuaid O\u2019Dwyer said: \u201cThe resilience shown by children like D\u00e1ire inspires us all.<\/p>\n

\u201cA wish is so much more than a single moment \u2013 it brings joy, hope and treasured memories to the whole family, reminding them of what really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said the organisation is \u201cdeeply grateful to Shane Lowry for his generosity, and to DP World Tour and Amgen for making this extraordinary wish possible at the Irish Open\u201d.<\/p>\n
