A cleaning can be seen in the background. \" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>NHS Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust<\/p>\n<p>Chief Executive Kevin McNamara honours Sharon Cornwell&#8217;s achievement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A nurse has marked a major milestone with 50 years of service in the NHS. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In 1980, Sharon Cornwell became the youngest sister to be employed at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) in Gloucestershire at just 23 years old. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Throughout her career she has performed a variety of roles at CGH and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, she went on to open one of the first surgical assessment areas in the country. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Many of her colleagues agree if they were ever unwell, Sharon would be their first choice of nurse.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/e0ea8470-87ed-11f0-b36e-47414de99d82.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"NHS Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust The Image shows a women in a 1970s nurse work outfit, she has big orange hair and is wearing lots of black eye makeup.\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>NHS Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust<\/p>\n<p>Ms Cornwell began her student nurse training the day after her 18th birthday in 1975<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In 1975, Ms Cornwell attended student nurse training at Cheltenham General Hospital the day after her 18th birthday and worked on the wards until she was fully qualified. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Over the years, she worked in a variety of roles including, staff nurse, night sister (Now the Acute Care Response Team), ward manager and site manager. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms Cornwell became ward manager of Prescott Ward in 1998. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Kevin McNamara, Chief Executive, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said that &#8220;across five decades she has been admired, respected and valued. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Her career is a testament to professionalism, commitment and care,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Annabelle MartinBBC News, Gloucestershire NHS Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust Chief Executive Kevin McNamara honours Sharon Cornwell&#8217;s achievement.
