official website of the German government<\/a><\/p>\nAccording to an official statement by the German government, as of September 15, 2025, the head of Germany\u2019s Federal Intelligence Service (BND) will be Martin Yeger. His candidacy is seen as a continuation of the diplomatic approach in the realm of intelligence and security at the highest level.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Yeger held a number of senior positions in the government and diplomacy: he was State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and he also headed the embassies in Kabul (Afghanistan) and Baghdad (Iraq). Since July 2023, he has been serving as Germany\u2019s acting ambassador to Ukraine, and at the time of publication he remained in that post in Kyiv.<\/p>\n
The 62-year-old Yeger will replace Bruno Kalya, who headed the BND for almost nine years. Kalya moves to the role of Germany\u2019s representative to the Holy See in the Vatican. It is expected that the new head of intelligence will ensure a smooth transition and strengthen coordination between the agencies, in particular with the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) and the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD).<\/p>\n
Together with the BND team the new intelligence team continues to engage with domestic and external structures to respond to contemporary challenges. The head\u2019s transition occurs amid growing attention to strategic directions of intelligence and security in Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n

They expect that the new head will ensure stronger coordination between the BND, BfV and MAD, and strengthen interaction with the country\u2019s diplomatic and operational structures. There is also talk of a more integrated approach to intelligence processes in response to geopolitical challenges in Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n
