{"id":397689,"date":"2025-09-04T16:27:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T16:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/397689\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T16:27:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T16:27:12","slug":"lisbon-funicular-cable-crash-who-are-the-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/397689\/","title":{"rendered":"Lisbon funicular cable crash: Who are the victims?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/5149d780-8978-11f0-93a9-c9fc9cc74be9.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"Getty Images Flowers in tribute to the victims are pictured on the site of the Gloria funicular railway \" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Portugal is in mourning after 16 people died and some 20 more were injured when Lisbon&#8217;s famous funicular cable railway derailed on Wednesday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A transport worker was among those killed, while a three-year-old German boy was reported to have escaped with minor injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Those hurt include four Portuguese, and 11 foreign nationals from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, South Korea, Morocco and Cape Verde, according to emergency services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Police have not yet confirmed the identities of those who died, but here is what we do know about the victims.<\/p>\n<p>Transport worker, ex-volleyball referee and German father among the dead<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Some 16 people died in the crash, Portuguese Prime Minister Lu\u00eds Montenegro told a press conference on Thursday. The number was revised down after emergency services put the toll at 17 earlier in the day. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Among the dead were seven men and eight women, and foreigners, Margarida Castro Martins, head of Lisbon&#8217;s Civil Protection Agency, said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Some foreign nationals were also killed, but where they were from remains unclear. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Portuguese transport union Sitra said Andr\u00e9 Jorge Gon\u00e7alves Marques, who worked as the brake guard on the funicular,<b id=\"\" class=\"sc-d16436d-0 jpoiOL\"> <\/b>was among the dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In a statement on Facebook, the union wrote: &#8220;We send our condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the accident and wish them a speedy recovery as well as the best recovery to the others injured in the accident.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">He was a &#8220;dedicated, kind and happy professional, always willing to contribute to the greater good&#8221;, according to his employer Carris, which runs the funicular.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Former volleyball referee Pedro Manuel Alves Trindade has been named as another victim of the crash by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation which said it was &#8220;deeply saddened by the tragedy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It said Mr Trindade had served as leader of the Lisbon Volleyball Association as well as being a referee for it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1f24d030-89a9-11f0-9a26-53a7b49d8dfd.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Portuguese Volleyball Federation Pedro Trindade, a man with grey hair a black suit and white shirt with no tie, looks at the camera\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>Portuguese Volleyball Federation<\/p>\n<p>Pedro Trindade was a former president of the Lisbon Volleyball Association<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms Martins said the injured included 12 women and seven men aged between 24 and 65, and a three-year-old child.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Local media reported that a German family-of-three were on board the funicular when it crashed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The father died at the scene, Portuguese news outlet Observador reported, while the mother was said to be in a critical condition in hospital, and a three-year-old boy sustained minor injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A man in his 50s and woman in her 40s &#8211; employees of the charity Santa Casa da Miseric\u00f3rdia &#8211; also died, according to local media. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Correio da Manha reported that seven employees of the charity were also injured. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Of five &#8220;severely injured&#8221; people taken to S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 hospital on Wednesday, one has died, three were in a &#8220;controlled condition&#8221;, and one was in intensive care, the hospital said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It added that a pregnant woman and a child were among four people with minor injuries who had been discharged. <\/p>\n<p>What we still don&#8217;t know<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The Gl\u00f3ria funicular can carry about 40 passengers and is extremely popular with tourists &#8211; but it is also crucial for the city&#8217;s residents, to help them travel up and down Lisbon&#8217;s hilly streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">We don&#8217;t know how many people were on board, or the identity of all those who died.
