On Wednesday afternoon (August 3), an RMT union spokesperson told MyLondon it is &#8216;seeking a revised offer&#8217; and &#8216;strikes remain on&#8217;, hours after <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/transport\/tube-strike-latest-talks-break-down-rmt-tfl-london-underground-b1245790.html\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">talks with TfL<\/a> reached an impasse over the union&#8217;s demand for 32\u2011hour week vs TfL&#8217;s 3.4 per cent pay offer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">MyLondon understands the RMT has been clear it will only accept a reduction in working hours. TfL believes the reduction is unaffordable and impractical. With both sides refusing to back down, as it stands the<strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\"> strikes <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mylondon.news\/news\/transport\/london-underground-staff-strike-dates-32323190\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"plannedLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">planned<\/a> from Friday (September 5) to Thursday (September 11) <\/strong>will go ahead <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">unless a deal is reached by Friday night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In the past, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mylondon.news\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/big-half-marathon-tube-strike-32406612\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tube strikes<\/a> have been called off last minute, but even if a deal is reached over the weekend, it may still be difficult to prevent disruption next week. The action will impact every Underground line, causing no service between Monday and Thursday, and limited services on Sunday. The Elizabeth line and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mylondon.news\/all-about\/london-overground\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">London Overground<\/a> are not affected as the drivers are part of a different union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The RMT previously accused TfL of taking a &#8216;dismissive approach&#8217; to negotiations and said management\u2019s failure to engage seriously with demands over wages, extreme shift patterns, fatigue management, and working hours has \u201cfuelled widespread anger and distrust among the workforce\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: &#8220;[Members] are not after a king&#8217;s ransom, but fatigue and extreme shift rotations are serious issues impacting on our members health and wellbeing &#8211; all of which have not been adequately addressed for years by LU management.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_Untitled-2.png\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Claire Mann (Transport for London) and Eddie Dempsey (RMT union)(Image: Getty Images\/Tfl\/RMT)Hours reduction &#8216;neither practical nor affordable&#8217; &#8211; TfL<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In an email to all staff on Wednesday, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/transport\/tube-strike-latest-talks-break-down-rmt-tfl-london-underground-b1245790.html\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">reported by the Evening Standard<\/a>, Nick Dent, TfL\u2019s director of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mylondon.news\/all-about\/london-underground\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">London Underground<\/a> customer operations, said pay budget is &#8216;best spent&#8217; increasing pay rather than reducing contractual hours. TfL claims a a small reduction in contractual hours will cost the organisation tens of millions pounds, and that they have already put in measures to reduce fatigue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Claire Mann, TfL&#8217;s Chief Operating Officer, said: &#8220;We welcome further engagement with our unions about fatigue and rostering across London Underground, but a reduction in the contractual 35-hour working week is neither practical nor affordable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Last year the Mayor of London <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mylondon.news\/all-about\/sadiq-khan\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sadiq Khan<\/a> prevented a walk-out with a \u00a330million deal, giving an 11 per cent boost to the lowest paid staff. Advanced operators were paid more, earning an average of <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u00a375,677<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Tube drivers typically work around <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">35 hours per week<\/strong>, spread across about three and a half shifts. A standard operator earned <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u00a335.70 an hour<\/strong>, while advanced operators were paid <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u00a339.20 an hour<\/strong>. Overtime was significantly higher, with regular drivers earning <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u00a344.62 per hour<\/strong> and advanced drivers <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u00a349.00 per hour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Elizabeth line drivers, meanwhile, saw their pay boosted earlier this year. Following a deal struck in February, they now make <strong class=\"Strong_strong__e2x35\">\u00a375,000 a year<\/strong> \u2013 more than the average Tube operator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Pay for London bus drivers is considerably lower than on the Tube.
