{"id":398060,"date":"2025-09-04T19:43:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T19:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/398060\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T19:43:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T19:43:15","slug":"starmer-hopes-10bn-deal-to-build-norwegian-warships-in-glasgow-is-first-of-many-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/398060\/","title":{"rendered":"Starmer hopes \u00a310bn deal to build Norwegian warships in Glasgow is first of many"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking to BAE workers in Govan, he signalled other countries could follow Norway and place orders for frigates in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Defence announced the deal last weekend, and it is the biggest of its kind for both the UK and Norway.<\/p>\n<p>It will see Type 26 frigates constructed at the BAE Systems yard in Govan and will allow a fleet of at least 13 anti-submarine ships from the UK and Norway \u2013 at least five of which will be Norwegian \u2013 to operate jointly in northern Europe as they look to deal with increased Russian activity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2.81478182.jpg\" alt=\"Sir Keir Starmer wearing a yellow hi-vis jacket and grey hardhat\" data-title=\"Sir Keir Starmer visit to shipyard\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Andy Buchanan\" data-usage-terms=\"\"  \/>Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited BAE sites in Glasgow on Thursday (Andy Buchanan\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>In his visit to the shipyard on Thursday, Sir Keir said it was the reputation of the workers that won the contract, fending off competition from France, Germany and the US.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won that because of you,\u201d he said. \u201cSo there\u2019s no point thanking me because I could not have landed this order if Norway didn\u2019t have confidence in what you\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I mean by confidence in what you\u2019re doing is the quality of what you do here but also the speed at which you could turn this around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means the 15 years\u2019 worth of shipbuilding here has been secured by you on your reputation, and I really want you to take that in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/2.81478180.jpg\" alt=\"Sir Keir Starmer viewed beyond a banner which reads #historymakers\" data-title=\"Sir Keir Starmer visit to shipyard\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Wire\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Wire\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Andy Buchanan\" data-usage-terms=\"\"  \/>The Prime Minister said he hopes the contract will be the first of many (Andy Buchanan\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister said countries will now be looking at the UK for defence deals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery country across Europe has increased their defence spending and they\u2019re looking for countries to collaborate with on the defence building that they need to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Norway is first up. We\u2019re talking to the Danish, we\u2019re talking to Sweden, we\u2019re talking to Turkey and other countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I hope this is only the first in what will be a series of contracts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is down to you. It\u2019s down to Scotland and Glasgow and what you and those before you\u2019ve been doing for generations.
